PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Vikings dropped a pair of games on the second day of the GCU Invitational hosted by Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz. The Vikings opened the day with a 10-0 loss to San Jose State before falling 10-3 to Nevada.
Â
Freshman OF
Tayler Gunesch continued to hit well at the plate on day two of the invitational. After being held without a hit against the Spartans, she tallied her second multi-hit game of the year, going 2-for-4 with her first career RBI against the Wolf Pack.
Â
Portland State (0-9 overall) had just three baserunners and scratched out just one hit in a 10-0 loss in five innings to San Jose State to open the day.
Â
The Vikings fell behind early in the second game of the day against Nevada after the Wolf Pack plated four runs in the bottom of the first off PSU starting pitcher freshman RHP
Emma Detamore. Nevada added another run in the bottom of the second to take a 5-0 lead.
Â
Senior OF
SheaLee Lindsey worked a two-out walk in the top of the third inning. Lindsey stole second and then advanced to third on the throw.
Shae Nelson then drove her in from third with a single to left field giving the Vikings their first run in 21 innings.
Â
Freshman OF
Marissa Bruno then singled to the pitcher putting two runners on. Gunesch drove in her first career run with a single through the left side to make it a 5-2 game.
Â
After Nevada added a run in the bottom of the third, Portland State plated another two-out run in the top of the fourth. Freshman IF
Korina Krueg reached with two outs on a bunt single back to the pitcher. After senior IF
Celena Carrisosa reached on a fielding error, Lindsey drove in Krueg from third on a single to third to make it 6-3.
Â
That would be as close as the Vikings would get as Nevada plated three more in the bottom of the fourth and one more in the bottom of the fifth to go up 10-3. Portland State got runners in scoring position in each of the final two frames but left them stranded on the base paths.
Â
The Vikings did much better with their situational hitting against the Wolf Pack. PSU came into the game with 10 two-out hits over the first eight games (1.25 per game). Against Nevada, they tallied six hits with two outs. All three of their RBIs against Nevada came with two outs, they entered the game with just one two-out RBI on the season.
Â
Portland State will have one more chance this weekend to get into the win column. The Vikings will take on the Rhode Island Rams Sunday morning at 9 a.m. MT. The Rams are 1-7 this season heading into their game against Nevada Saturday night.
