THIS WEEK: Portland State concludes the first half of Big Sky Conference play this weekend with another tough road trip. The Vikings head to Flagstaff, Ariz. for a Thursday, Oct. 13 showdown with Big Sky leading Northern Arizona at 7 p.m. PT. The Vikings then head to Cedar City, Utah for a Saturday, Oct. 15 match up with Southern Utah at 6 p.m. PT.
After this week's matches, the Vikings will be at the midway point of their Big Sky slate. The Vikings have had a rigorous road schedule to open league play with six of their first eight matches on the road. Overall, the Vikings will have played 15 of their last 17 matches on the road following this week's action.
Next week the schedule turns in the Vikings' favor as they will finish out conference play with six-of-eight matches at home.
To get to the favorable part of the schedule, Portland State will have to go through one of the league's best teams in Northern Arizona. The Lumberjacks own the league's best overall record at 15-4 and are tied atop the standings with a 5-1 conference mark. They are also a perfect 4-0 at home this season.

PORTLAND STATE QUICK HITS
• The Vikings are 10-8 overall this season and 2-4 in Big Sky Conference play. They are 3-2 at home, 2-5 on the road, and 5-1 in neutral site matches.
• PSU is 3-2 in three-set matches, 5-5 in four-set matches, and 2-1 in five-set matches.
• Portland State picked up its ninth win of the season in its Big Sky opener at Idaho State. The nine wins match the Vikings' season total in each of the last two seasons.
• Portland State started the season 2-0 for the first time since 2010 with wins over Long Beach St. (3-1) and Colorado (3-2).
• Portland State's win over Colorado was just the third win over a Pacific-12 Conference school since the Vikings moved to the NCAA Division I level. Portland State defeated Oregon in 2005 and Utah in 2012, the Utes second year in the Pac-12.
• Portland State came back from an 0-2 deficit to win 3-2 at Utah State (9/8) for the first time since doing it against Seattle in 2011.
• Portland State improved to 2-0 against Pac-12 opponents with its four-set win over Arizona State at the Boise State Invitational (9/16). Portland State now has four wins over Pac-12 schools during its DI era.
• Portland State is currently on a season-high three-match losing streak. The Vikings have won just two sets over the three matches.
BEST IN THE SKY: Senior OH
Pati Anae has solidified herself as one of the best offensive weapons in the Big Sky, and the nation, this season. She has led the team in kills and points per set in 17 of 18 matches this season, tallying five 20-kill performances along the way. She leads the conference, and is in the top 20 nationally, in three statistical categories. She has come up big for the Vikings all season long and is tied for fifth in the league with nine double-doubles. Her 4.43 kills per set mark this season is on pace to be the fifth best for the Vikings since 1982.
GOING TO THE BENCH: The Vikings have shown tremendous depth this season, especially from their outside hitters. Portland State has had seven players, over the course of five matches, come off the bench to record double-digit kills. Freshman OH

Sarah Brennan (10) each came off the bench in the Vikings' comeback win over Utah State (9/8). The Vikings were down 0-2 against the Aggies before coming back to win 3-2.
BIG SKY OPENERS: In 21 seasons as part of the Big Sky Conference, the Vikings are 8-13 all-time in conference openers, but are 7-3 under Head Coach
Michael Seemann. The Vikings lost their first nine Big Sky home openers before picking up their first in 2005. Seemann is 8-2 in his 10 league home openers.
WIN NO. 1,100: Portland State tallied the program's 1,100th recorded win (records for the 1973 season are unavailable), dating back to the 1969 season, with its five-set comeback win over Utah State on Sept. 8.
POTW SWEEP: Juniors
Erin Clark and
Tasha Bojanic swept the Big Sky Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards respectively after leading the Vikings to a 3-0 weekend at the USU Invitational. Bojanic was named to the all-tournament team after leading the Vikings with 5.18 digs per set. Clark was named the Tournament MVP after posting a pair of double-doubles and a career-high 57 assists in the Vikings' come from behind win over Utah State. Clark averaged 11.45 assists and 2.27 digs per set over the three matches. She also tallied six assists and seven blocks.
OFFENSIVE POTW: Senior OH
Pati Anae earned her first Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week award after leading the Vikings to a 2-1 record over the opening week of the season. Anae hit .348 while averaging 5.00 kills per set, which was 11th in the nation. She posted 19 kills and nine digs in the opener against Long Beach State before posting a career-high 28 kills in the Vikings' win over Colorado. She added 18 digs for her first double-double of the season against the Buffaloes.
PAC-12 HOME WIN: Portland State came back from down 2-1 in the match to defeat Colorado in five sets for its first home win over a Pac-12 opponent since defeating Oregon in 2005. The Vikings took the first set 28-26 before dropping the next two sets. Portland State took the fourth set, 25-19, to force a fifth. The fifth set stayed tight throughout before the Vikings took it, 16-14, to take the match. Portland State had four players with double-figure kills led by
Pati Anae's career-high 28 kills.
NORTHERN ARIZONA QUICK HITS
• Northern Arizona comes into play this week with the league's best overall record at 15-4. The Lumberjacks are also tied atop the Big Sky standings with a 5-1 record. They are a perfect 4-0 at home, 5-3 on the road, and 6-1 at a neutral site.
• The 'Jacks are 7-0 in three-set matches, 5-3 in four set-matches, and 3-1 in five-setters.
• Northern Arizona boasts the league's best team hitting mark at .278. The Lumberjacks are third in the Big Sky with an opponent hitting mark of .159. They are the best serving team in the league with 148 service aces (2.03 aces per set), 49 aces better than second best (Portland State, 99).
• Lauren Jacobsen is second in the Big Sky with 4.37 kills per set this season. She has posted 17 double-digit kill performances this season, along with 15 double-digit dig performances. Her 14 double-doubles it tops in the league.
• Brittni Dorsey, Sydney Lema, Jordan Anderson, and Jensen Barton are all in the Big Sky top 10 in service aces per set.
VS. NORTHERN ARIZONA: The Lumberjacks lead the all-time series 21-19, with all match coming since the Vikings joined the Big Sky Conference in 1996. The Vikings won 16-straight matches from 2004-2012. Since, the 'Jacks have taken six of the last seven matches, including four straight. The last PSU win came at home in 2013. The last PSU road win came in four sets in 2011.
SOUTHERN UTAH QUICK HITS
• Southern Utah is 2-16 overall this season and 0-6 in Big Sky play. The Thunderbirds are currently on a 12-match losing streak. They host Sacramento State Thursday night before the Vikings come to town Saturday.
• Southern Utah is 0-3 at home, 0-8 on the road, and 2-5 at a neutral site. The Thunderbirds are 1-7 in three-set matches, 0-4 in four-set matches, and 1-5 in five-setters.
• Southern Utah is hitting .149 as a team this season, second worst in the Big Sky. SUU is allowing opponents to hit .220.
• Chennin Benson leads the team with 2.99 kills per set this year.
VS. SOUTHERN UTAH: Portland State leads the all-time series 6-2, dating back to the 2012 season when the Thunderbirds joined the Big Sky Conference. Portland State took the first four matches in the series. The teams have split the season series each of the last two years.
