Vikings Set for Multiple 2016 Debuts at Bronco Invitational Saturday

MEET NOTES (PDF)

PORTLAND, Ore. —
The Portland State track & field team returns to action with a vengeance this Saturday, as several Vikings idle during last week's season-opening meets will compete at the Bronco Invitational this weekend at Jacksons Indoor Track in Nampa, Idaho.

Among the Vikings competing for the first time this season, the team's distance crew will make several 2016 debuts Saturday, as the team will run several athletes in the men's and women's mile and men's and women's 3,000 meters. Spencer Russell and Ben Richardson return in the men's mile after running the 800 meters at the UW Indoor Preview last weekend, but freshman Kaila Ann Gibson and Nevina De Luca will make their PSU indoor debuts in the women's mile. Eleven Vikings will run in the men's and women's 3,000 meters, meanwhile, as Cheryn Trapp, Maggie Coleman, Sarah Medved, Kennedy Martin, Jocelyn Reynolds and Katie Hendricks run in the women's race; while Neil Seibert, Alex Cisneros, Justin Wikler, Ethan Cotton and Jacob Hicks run in the men's race.

Of the Vikings in the men's and women's 3,000 meters, Medved, Cisneros and Reynolds will be running in their first events ever at Portland State, while Cotton, Hicks and Wikler will be running in their first-ever indoor events.

Junior Akayla Anderson will also make her 2016 debut in the 60-meter hurdles, after finishing second in the Big Sky in the event last season. Anderson will be taking over the hurdles mantle at Portland State this season, taking the reins from Jazmin Ratcliff, who ended her career with three straight conference titles in the short hurdles.

Portland State will also compete in the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay for the first time this season, with Kris Tollefson, Nyalual Beng, Rachel Vinjamuri and Whitney Diggs running on the women's side; and Mitchell Gable, Kevin Robinson, Spencer Russell and Sheldon Prince running for the men.

Elsewhere, Jean-Luc Toku will double in the men's long jump and triple jump, making his PSU debut after taking all-state honors in each event as a senior in high school last spring.

The Vikings will get started at the Bronco Invitational at 8 a.m. (MT) Saturday, as Donté Robinson, Kevin Robinson and Rockwell Tufty compete in the men's high jump. Running events, meanwhile, get started at 10 a.m. (MT) with the prelims of the women's 60 meters, with Genna Settle, Adia White and Brandi Williams competing for Portland State.

COMING UP:
The Vikings head back to Dempsey Indoor for the UW Invitational in Seattle, Wash., next weekend, Jan. 29-30.

UW INDOOR PREVIEW RECAP:
Senior sprinter Sheldon Prince picked up the Vikings' first Big Sky auto qualifying mark in the 400 meters, as he finished in 48.84 seconds to lead the Vikings at the UW Indoor Preview, Jan. 16, at the Dempsey Indoor Facility. Several other Vikings came close to auto marks, none closer than sophomore sprinter/jumper Spenser Schmidt, who came within one centimeter short of the distance needed to qualify for the meet, as he jumped 22-07.25 (6.89m). Senior high jumper Rockwell Tufty also took three attempts at what would have been a Big Sky qualifying mark of 2.05 meters, but missed on all three despite clearing his first two heights on his first attempt. Additionally, senior Spencer Russell and junior Ben Richardson came within a second of hitting the Big Sky auto mark in the 800 meters, as they finished within .03 seconds of each other at 1:54.70 and 1:54.73, respectively. Freshman sprinter Rachel Vinjamuri also had an impressive debut in the 400 meters, as she led three Vikings in the event with her time of 57.36 seconds, which moved her up to fifth all-time at Portland State in the event just one race into her PSU career.

ED JACOBY INVITATIONAL RECAP:
Senior Kevin Robinson completed his first heptathlon at Portland State, finishing fifth at the Ed Jacoby Invitational with 4,369 points, Jan. 16, at the Jacksons Indoor Track. Robinson went over 700 points in two events, as he tied for first overall with a clearance of 6-05.25 (1.96m) in the high jump to end the first day of the competition and then opened the second day of the competition with his time of 8.89 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. Sophomore Donté Robinson also competed at the meet, but was unable to clear a height in the pole vault and did not finish. Donté Robinson had been off to a good start in the heptathlon, as he topped 700 points in the 60 meters (7.44 seconds) and high jump (6-04.00, 1.93m).

BIG SKY QUALIFIERS:
Senior sprinter Sheldon Prince hit the Big Sky qualifying mark in the 400 meters last Saturday at the UW Indoor Preview, assuring him of competing at the Big Sky meet in Bozeman, Mont., Feb. 25-27. The top 16 declared athletes in each event qualify for the meet, with the rest of the field after the auto qualifiers filled in following the descending order list within the conference. The combined events are the only ones that differ from that as only the top 14 declared athletes qualify in each of those events.
