Ogden, UT - Braxton Tucker's career-high 21 points helped the Portland State Vikings end a streak of futility at the Dee Events Center as PSU defeated Weber State, 69-63.
The Vikings had not won a game against Weber State in Ogden since 2006, losing 10 straight, including Big Sky Tournament matchups. But Tucker put his mid-range jump shot to work in the second half, scoring 13 of his 21, to hold off the defending Big Sky Champion Wildcats. Tucker made 9-12 shots overall and 5-6 after halftime.
DaShaun Wiggins, who did most of his damage in the first half, finished with 17 points and six rebounds for the Vikings. Tiegbe Bamba had his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Portland State's win moves it to 10-7 on the season, 4-3 in the Big Sky Conference. The Vikings move on to Idaho State on Saturday night.
Like they did last Saturday in a win over Idaho, Portland State grabbed an early lead and held onto it for most of the game. PSU led for more than 34 minutes and trailed for less than one minute all night.
It was a solid effort all the way around the Vikings shot 26-52 from the field (.500), out-rebounded Weber State, 37-35, and committed only nine turnovers. PSU also held the Wildcats to .361 shooting from the field. It was the Vikings best defensive performance and fewest points allowed in seven Big Sky Conference games.
Wiggins scored eight points, including a pair of three-point field goals, leading the Vikings to an early 14-9 lead. The Vikings maintained that advantage for the remainder of the half behind quality shooting, leading 31-24 at the break.
PSU shot 13-25 from the field (.520) and 4-6 from three-point range (.667). Wiggins made all three of his shots from behind the arc, totaling 12 points and five rebounds by halftime.
The Wildcats struggled to shoot, making only 10 of 35 shots (.286). Collin Spickerman played a big role on defense, blocking three Wildcat shots in the half.
Portland State's largest lead was 37-26 at the 18:03 mark of the second half before the Wildcats showed some life.
Jeremy Senglin scored five points in an 11-2 run that finally put the WSU back on top. Weber State led 53-52 with 7:49 left to play.
The Vikings responded with six straight points to go back up 58-53 and never trailed again. There were some white-knuckle moments in the late-going but PSU made six straight free throws in the final 48 seconds, with two each from Gary Winston, Zach Gengler and Tim Douglas, to secure the win.
Senglin led the Wildcats with 21 points and seven assists. Chris Golden scored 14 points.
Weber State's loss dropped it to 8-10 on the year, 3-4 in the Big Sky. It was only the Wildcats second home loss of the season.
