Vikings Drop a Pair of Four-Setters on the Second Day of Northwest Challenge

BOISE, Idaho
– The Portland State volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Saturday as part of the Northwest Challenge hosted by Boise State University. The Vikings fell to the Broncos and then to the Gonzaga Bulldogs, both in four sets.
 
Despite the pair of losses the Vikings' young players continue to shine on the court. Freshman Roni LaPierre tallied 11 kills against Boise State and then 15 against Gonzaga. LaPierre leads the Vikings with 34 kills (3.09 kills per set) through the first three matches of the season.
 
Freshman setter Erin Clark posted a career-high 48 assists against Gonzaga and is averaging 9.91 assists per set for the season.
 
Senior Leigh-Ann Haataja also continued her solid play on the outside with 14 kills against Gonzaga in the Vikings' final match of the weekend. She hit .324 against the Bulldogs and is hitting a team-best .316 for the season.
 
Portland State dropped its first match of the day against Boise State in four sets. The Vikings fell behind two sets to none with 25-12 and 25-19 losses to start the match. The Vikings came back and took the third set 25-23 after hitting .452. They tallied 15 kills on 31 attacks in the third with just one error. PSU could not mount the comeback and fell in the fourth, 25-17.
 
In the second match of the day against Gonzaga, the Vikings dropped a marathon first set 29-27. PSU evened the match with a 25-22 win in the second set. The Vikings hit .452 in the second with 16 kills.
 
Senior Cheyne Corrado led the way with six kills in the second. Corrado finished the match with 17 kills, which tied her career high. She added 11 digs for her first double-double of the season.
 
The Vikings' hitting turned cold as they lost the final two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-19 to fall to the Bulldogs in four sets.
 
Portland State hits the road again next weekend as the Vikings travel to Boulder, CO where they will take on Colorado, Pittsburg, and Georgia Southern.
