Vikings Send Four Athletes to USATF Junior Outdoor Championships

MEET INFORMATION

PORTLAND, Ore. —
The Portland State track and field teams will send four freshmen to the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships Saturday and Sunday, July 5-6, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Freshmen Whitney Diggs, CeCelia Jackson and Baileh Simms of the PSU women's track and field team, as well as Gifton Okoronkwo of the PSU men's track and field team, will compete at the meet for the Vikings. The three participants for the PSU women tie them with such schools as Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor and South Carolina as the fourth most-represented women's team in the NCAA at this year's USATF junior national meet.

Diggs and Jackson will each run in two events for the PSU women at the meet, with Diggs competing in the women's 200 and 400 meters, and Jackson competing in the women's 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. Simms and Okoronkwo, meanwhile, will compete in the women's long jump and men's triple jump, respectively.

Jackson will kick off the meet for the Vikings with the first round of the women's 400-meter hurdles at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, and will return to the track at 4:55 p.m. later in the day for the first round of the women's 100-meter hurdles. Diggs will also compete in the first round of the women's 400 meters at 4:25 p.m. Saturday. Diggs will then open the women's 200 meters Sunday with the first round of the event at 2:45 p.m. Simms and Okoronkwo will also compete in the women's long jump and men's triple jump at 2:30 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. Sunday, respectively.

Jackson's participation at the junior national meet comes after she placed seventh in the heptathlon at the USATF Junior Outdoor Combined Events Championships last Thursday. Jackson scored 4,839 points in the junior national heptathlon, and beat her rank among the field going into the meet.
