Game 2 Box Score - PDF | HTMLCORVALLIS – The Portland State softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against the Oregon State Beavers Tuesday afternoon in Corvallis, Ore. The Beavers took the first game 13-1 in five innings before taking the second game 6-3.
Junior right fielder
Aubrey Nitschelm went 3-for-5 with a run scored to lead the Vikings at the plate. Senior third baseman
Crysta Conn added a pair of this and an RBI on the day. Junior first baseman
Brittany Hendrickson scored a run in the first game before giving the Vikings their biggest hit of the day, a solo home run in game two.
Oregon State (15-29 overall) jumped out to a three-run lead in the bottom of the first in game one. Hendrickson walked and then scored in the top of the third to pull the Vikings (7-34) to within a pair at 3-1.
The Beavers blew the game wide open in the bottom of the third with 10 runs on 10 hits off Portland State pitcher
Melissa Masters and
Raya Johnson to go up by the final score of 13-1. It was the most runs the Vikings had given up in a single inning this season.
Oregon State plated two runs in the bottom of second inning of game two to take a 2-0 lead.
Kayla Norrie singled to right field to lead off the top of the third inning and was then lifted for pinch runner
Mackenzie Bourbanis. Bourbanis moved to third after
Shae Nelson reached on a throwing error by the Beavers' third baseman.
Alicia Fine then drove Bourbanis in on a sacrifice fly to left to make the score 2-1.
After Oregon State plated two more runs in the bottom of the third, the Vikings added a run in the top of the fourth on another sacrifice fly, this time from Masters.
The Beavers plated single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-2 lead through five complete. Hendrickson gave the Vikings another run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run to right center to bring the score to 6-3.
The Vikings got a runner on in the top seventh but were unable to bring any more runs across and fell 6-3.
Portland State now returns home for a three-game series with Weber State to close out the season. The Big Sky Conference series begins Friday, May 2 at 4 p.m. with a doubleheader. It then concludes Saturday at 1 p.m., which will also be senior day.
