PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland State men's tennis team fell 6-1 to Seattle Friday, as the Redhawks swept the singles matches at West Hills Racquet and Fitness Club after the Vikings won a close doubles point.
The Vikings (5-15) started the match with a 1-0 lead after beating the Redhawks (11-13) at No. 2 and 3 doubles. The Redhawks claimed an early 1-0 lead in doubles, after Kevin Lynch and Jason Bedione took a close match from PSU junior
Brent Wheeler and sophomore
Ian Risenhoover at No. 1 doubles. Wheeler and Risenhoover had come back from an early deficit to serve at 6-7 with the chance to force a tiebreaker, but Lynch and Bedione broke them again to win 8-6.
The close matches broke the Vikings way at the other two doubles positions, however, starting with sophomore
Wil Cochrane and freshman Kacper Stelamaszak's 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles over Seattle's Zach Kosanke and Ian Clare. That win tied the teams at 1-1 in doubles, and junior
Alec Marx and senior
Abhinav Mishra sealed the doubles-point victory for the Vikings from there, beating Seattle's Riley Newman and Connor Leahy 8-7 at No. 3 doubles.
The Vikings have now won the doubles point in five of their past six matches, and the teams of Cochrane and Stelmaszak and Marx and Mishra have won at No. 2 and 3 doubles, respectively, in all five of those wins.
Portland State couldn't continue its hot start in singles, however, as the Vikings recent bad luck in three-set matches continued against the Redhawks. The Vikings dropped three three-set matches and a match tiebreaker to the Redhawks Friday, six days after losing three of four three-set matches to Eastern Washington.
The Vikings lost in three sets at No. 3, 5 and 6 singles Friday, and lost in a match tiebreaker at No. 4. Bediones beat Cochrane 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 3, while Newman beat Mishra 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5, and Leahy beat Marx 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 6. Risenhoover, meanwhile, played the tightest match of the dual Friday against Clare, as Clare only beat Risenhoover after winning a first-set tiebreaker, 10-8, and then a match tiebreaker, 10-5, for a 7-6 (8), 2-6, 1-0 (10-5) win.
Outside of the three-set matches, Lynch beat Wheeler 7-6, 6-2 at No. 1, while Kosanke beat Stelmaszak 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2.
The Vikings return to action Sunday, April 13, when they host Northern Arizona at West Hills Racquet and Fitness Club. The match will start at 11 a.m. (PT).
