Vikings Fall in Non-Conference Match against Gonzaga, 6-1

BOX SCORE - PDF | HTML

PORTLAND, Ore. — Stepping out of conference, the Portland State men's tennis team fell 6-1 to Gonzaga Saturday at the West Hills Racquet and Fitness Club.

Despite the loss, the Vikings (2-12) took two singles matches to three sets against the Bulldogs (9-6), while the Vikings' No. 1 doubles team of junior Brent Wheeler and sophomore Ian Risenhoover beat Gonzaga's Jack Schoebel and Muzeen Ismath at No. 1 doubles.

Risenhoover and Wheeler beat Schoebel and Ismath 8-7 (7-5), their first win in a tiebreaker this season after losing their first five tiebreakers to start the year.

Risenhoover and Wheeler's win at No. 1 still couldn't propel the Vikings into winning the doubles point, however, as Gonzaga took the matches at No. 2 and 3. Gonzaga's Joey Brandt and Vladimir Mijatovic beat Portland State junior Alec Marx and freshman Kacper Stelmaszak 8-3 at No. 2, while Gonzaga's Nick Kamisar and Pablo Mosquera Pérez beat sophomores Nate Chart and Wil Cochrane 8-4 at No. 3.

The Vikings gave the Bulldogs a fight in singles, though, highlighted by Stelmaszak's win over Gonzaga's Hayden Smith at No. 2. Stelmaszak beat Smith 7-5, 6-4 in the match, giving him his second win at No. 2 in the last three matches.

Risenhoover and Marx, meanwhile, took their matches to three sets at No. 4 and 5 singles, respectively. Risenhoover had four match points in his match against Schoebel, but ultimately fell in a heart-breaking third-set tiebreaker and lost 2-6, 6-4, 6-7 (7-9). Marx also forced a third set with a second-set win in his match against Ismath, but lost the match 4-6, 6-4, 2-6.

Besides those two, Wheeler lost 3-6, 2-6 to Kamisar at No. 1 singles, while Cochrane lost 1-6, 2-6 to Mijatovic at No. 3, and Chart lost 0-6, 0-6 to Mosquera Pérez at No. 6.

The Vikings remain out of conference for their next two matches, as they'll play Creighton and Nebraska-Omaha in Omaha, Neb. on March 26 and 27, respectively. The Vikings' match against Creighton will start at 12 p.m. (CT) on the 26th.
