OGDEN, Utah — Portland State dropped a road match at Weber State on Sunday, 6-1, at the Edman Tennis Courts, despite four matches going to third sets.
Weber State (2-9, 1-1) secured the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Luca Prino and Luke Lu fell 6-3 to Toit Malan and William Zulch at No. 2, while Ignacio Ruiz and Aarjun Pandit were defeated 6-3 by Theo Mottier and Clement Lecoq at No. 3.
The Vikings struggled to find a momentum shift in singles action, though they played three matches to a full third set.
At No. 3, Prino took the opening set 6-2 over Dawid Scholtz before Scholtz responded with 6-0 and 6-4 wins to take the match. At No. 4, Edoardo Cravanzola battled Toit Malan in a three-set battle, ultimately falling in a super tiebreak, 15-13, after splitting the first two sets.
Hampus Hagglund also forced a third set at No. 6, winning the first set 6-4 against William Zulch before Zulch rallied for 6-1 and 6-3 victories.
Portland State picked up its lone point at No. 5, where Ignacio Ruiz clawed his way to a three-set win over Clement Lecoq, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.
Elsewhere, Aarjun Pandit fell 6-2, 7-5 to Ken Dinh at No. 1, while Maas Schotanus dropped a tight match at No. 2 to Theo Mottier in straight sets.
The Vikings will return to action on Tueaday, March 24 when they head to Logan, Utah to take on Utah State (10:00am PT).
