PORTLAND – Aubrey Mitchell posted a Portland State season-high 18 kills in the Vikings' five-set marathon win over the University of the Pacific Saturday night at the Peter W. Stott Center. It was the final match of the 2013 Portland State Volleyball Tournament for the Vikings. They lost to Oklahoma in four sets earlier in the day.
Mitchell's 18 kills came on a career-high 44 attacks. She hit .250 (18-7-44) in the match. Kaeli Patton posted her second-career double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs against the Tigers. Patton recorded the team's first double-double of the season earlier in the day against Oklahoma.
Cheyne Corrado (10 kills, 12 digs) and Garyn Schlatter (52 assists, 11 digs) each recorded their first double-doubles of the season against Pacific. Corrado finished with a team-high 54 attacks.
"We put together a couple of good sets against Oklahoma but came up short," seventh-year head coach Michael Seemann said. "Against Pacific we controlled them from the service line in those first two sets. It came down to us making plays in the fifth. We made some crazy, wild plays. We went back to the service and the same way we won the first two sets, we won the final two points. We served tough at the end."
Portland State 3, Pacific 2
The Vikings led wire-to-wire in the first sets taking them 25-18 and 25-15 respectively. Pacific, which played a NCAA record 14 five-set matches in 2012, would not go away taking the next two sets pushing the match to a decisive fifth set. Saturday night's match was the third five-set match of the tournament for Pacific.
Pacific jumped ahead early in the fifth with a kill and a service ace. Portland State took the next three points to go up 3-2. The Tigers just would not go away going on a 5-0 run to go up 7-3. Patton pulled the set to within one at 8-7 with a kill before a Pacific attacking error tied it at 8-8.
The Vikings found themselves again in a two point while before a Leigh-Ann Haataja kill and another Pacific error tied the set again, this time at 10-10. The set was tied again at 11-11, 13-13, and 14-14 before Pacific went up 15-14 serving for the match.
Mitchell came up with her biggest swing of the night with her 18th kill to tie the set again at 15-15. Mitchell's kill gave the Vikings the serve sending Kasimira "Kasi" Clark to the line. One of the areas of focus for Seemann's team has always been serve tough and that is exactly what Clark did coming up with her second ace of the match giving PSU match point.
Clark again served Pacific a tough ball to handle as the Tigers barely got the ball back over the net. When the ball came over the net, Haataja was waiting for the final kill of the match giving the Vikings the five-set win. Haataja finished with nine kills, none bigger than the last.
The win got the Vikings back into the win column after they dropped their first two matches of the tournament to BYU and Oklahoma.
Oklahoma 3, Portland State 1
The Vikings fell to Oklahoma earlier in the day in four-sets. They took the lead early in the first set going up 7-6 following a block by Haataja and Patton. After the teams traded points, the Sooners finished out the set with a pair of kills to even the match one set apiece.
The Vikings led 8-7 in the third set before the Sooners went on an 8-0 run to take a 15-8 lead. The Vikings went on a run of their own cutting the lead to two points at 17-15. After being close through most of the fourth set, Oklahoma took a 21-19 advantage late. Oklahoma closed out the fourth with a 4-0 run to win it 25-19.
