EUGENE, Ore. – The Portland State track and field teams were back in action this weekend as discus thrower, Sydney Johnson highlighted competition, setting the new program best mark at the Oregon Relays on Friday, in Eugene Ore. The Vikings had competitors at two meets as most of PSU's athletes participated in the Oregon Relays while Geronne Black ran at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.

Johnson, whose throw numbers have been improving on a weekly basis broke through in spectacular fashion this past weekend, shattering the former Portland State record set by Judith Burnett in 2006, recording a toss of 47.72m (156-07). Johnson bested Burnett's mark by nearly seven feet, recording the Big Sky's second-best mark this season.

In the distance events, Bianca Martin qualified for the Big Sky championship in another event as the senior recorded a mark of 16:28.60 in the 5,000-meter run.

The female sprinters showcased what they could do in Eugene as PSU runners came in no lower than 10th-overall in both the 100 and 200-meter events.

Sierra Brooks took top honors in the 100m coming in with a time of 12.12 seconds and a third place finish. Dominique Maloney and Jazmin Ratcliff finished close behind coming in fourth and sixth overall with times of 12.25 and 12.54, respectively. Freshman Adia White also finished in the top-10 with a mark of 12.72 and a ninth-place finish.

The story was similar in the 200m with Brooks and Maloney trading spots as Maloney came in third with a mark of 24.91 and Brooks finishing fourth with time of 25. Dejuanae Toliver took eighth in the event with a final time of 25.89 while White once again finished in the top-10 with a mark of 12.72, coming in 10th.

Ratcliff impressed in the 100-meter hurdle event tallying the program's second-best time with a mark of 13.89 and a second-place finish.

Aside from Johnson's impressive showing in the discus, another Johnson, Hanna Johnson, recorded a second-place finish in the shot put, coming in with a throw of 13.55m (44-05.50) in the event.

Meanwhile in Walnut, Calif., senior Geronne Black was running at the 55th Mt. SAC Relays in both the 100 and 200-meter events.

The Brooklyn, N.Y., native tallied her season-best time in the 100-meter event coming in sixth in a crowded field, with a time of 11.58. In the 200m she recorded a time of 24.52 and a 37th place finish.

On the men's side while no one qualified for the conference championship, there were still some impressive marks.
Jake Ovgard took third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.09, while Micheal Kubisiak (11.26), Sheldon Prince (11.42) and former Portland State football standout, Michael Williams (11.78), finished 10th, 11th and 13th, respectively.

In the 200m J.J. Rosenberg, Kubisiak and Ovgard all finished in the top-10. Rosenberg took top-honors for PSU coming in third with a mark of 22.20, while Kubisiak came in fifth with a time of 22.36 and Ovgard shortly after that in the eighth spot with a mark of 22.62.

In the field events Rockwell Tufty and Tyson Stipic garnered accolades in their respective events.

Tufty who has already punched his ticket to the Big Sky championships on May 8-11 at Forest Grove, Ore., finished the high jump with a final height of 1.96m (6-05.00) and a fifth-place finish.

Meanwhile in the triple jump, Stipic came in third with a final mark of 13.21m (43-04.25).

The Vikings continue to inch closer to the conference meet that Portland State will host in Forrest Grove, Ore., as PSU now has only two events left before competing at the Big Sky Championship. Portland State's next test will be at Brutus Hamilton Challenge at Berkley, Calif., on April 26-27.
