    Â
The Vikings and the Vandals have two common opponents this year with similar results. PSU beat UC Davis (79-63) and lost to Portland (92-76) at home, while Idaho won at UC Davis (80-76) and lost at Portland (88-74).

Â
DOUGLAS TAKES TOP HONORS: Portland State's Tim Douglas has been named the Big Sky Conference Basketball Player of the Week after his performance in last Saturday's contest against the University of Portland.Although the Vikings lost to the Pilots, 92-76, Douglas had a big night. The 5-10 junior point guard from Cerritos, CA scored a season-high 27 points, grabbed six rebounds, made four steals and three assists. Douglas hit 8-20 shots from the field, 5-8 from three-point range and 6-9 at the line in the game... for the season, Douglas leads the Vikings in scoring (16.6), assists (3.8), three-pointers made (14) and steals (13). Douglas shoots .452 from three-point range.
Â
BIG SKY PREVIEW: The game between Portland State and Idaho will be a preview of Big Sky Conference contests to come. An original member of the Big Sky Conference, Idaho left prior to Portland State's arrival in 1996-97. However, Idaho - current members of the Western Athletic Conference - will return to the Big Sky as a full member (with the exception of football) in 2014-15 and engage in regular league matchups with Portland State.
Â
THE ALL-TIME SERIES: Portland State and Idaho have played only three times since basketball was reinstated on the Park Blocks for the 1996-97 season, PSU is 2-1 in those games. The Vikings lead the all-time series, which dates back to the 1965-66 season, 10-9. PSU has won the last seven meetings in Portland. The most recent was an 81-48 decision on Dec. 30, 2005... Idaho won the last meeting, 77-68, in Moscow on Feb. 18, 2012. That game was part of the ESPN BracketBuster series. This week's game is the return contest.
Â
HOME COURT HAPPINESS: With a 4-1 record at home this season, Portland State has improved its non-conference home record to 34-5 at the Stott Center since the start of the 2006-07 season (PSU is 43-19 in Big Sky home games over that span). PSU is 21-5 against Division I schools, and 13-0 against lower division schools in those non-conference games. Among the five losses are San Jose State (2007-08, in overtime), Seattle (2009-10, on a three-pointer at the final buzzer), Portland (2010-11, by 11 points and last Saturday by 16 points) and Oregon State (2012-13, by five points).
Â
THE IDAHO VANDALS: The University of Idaho is a member of the Western Athletic Conference. The Vandals were 12-18 last season, 7-11 and sixth in WAC competition. Two starters and three letterwinners return from that team... Idaho is 4-5 this season heading into a Wednesday game at Montana. The Vandals are 1-2 on the road and 1-2 in neutral site games... Stephen Madison, a senior forward from Portland, leads the team with 16.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game... guard Connor Hill averages 13.2 points and has made 20 three-point field goals... point guard Glen Dean averages 12.1 points on the season... Idaho averages 74.0 points while giving up 75.8. The Vandals give up only 10 turnovers per game, but also force just 10.
Â
VIKINGS VS. THE WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE: Portland State is 24-19 against current members of the Western Athletic Conference... Head Coach Tyler Geving is 1-3 against WAC opponents.

Â
HOT SHOTS:
• JR G Tim Douglas has scored in double figures in all seven games this season. He has made 7 of his last 12 three-pointers (.583).
• JR G DaShaun Wiggins has averaged 16.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists over the last four games. In the last two games, he has made 10-15 FGs (.667) and 4-6 3-pt FGs (.667).
• JR C Brandon Cataldo is shooting .688 from the field (11-18) and 1.000 at the line (3-3).
• PSU made a season-best 10-18 three-pointers against Portland (.556).
Â
NOT SO HOT:
• PSU has been outrebounded by an average of 10.5 in the last two losses.
• Portland State was 0-14 on the road in 2012-13, is 0-2 this year, and has lost 18 straight road games overall.
Â
GOOD STARTS: New point guard Tim Douglas is making a big impact for the Vikings this season. He is averaging team-highs of 16.6 points, 3.8 assists and 1.8 steals. Douglas also leads in three-pointers with 14, while shooting .452 from distance.
• Douglas has led the Vikings in scoring in four games and assists in five games.
• He has scored in double figures in all seven games with a season-high 27 against Portland (12/7).
• Douglas was named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week on Dec. 10.
• Douglas ranks fifth in scoring, fourth in assists and second in minutes played in the Big Sky Conference.
Â
MOORE, MOORE, MOORE: SR F Aaron Moore is the top returning Viking after leading PSU in scoring and rebounding last season. Despite a slow start to this season due to back issues, Moore has returned to form. For the year, he averages 12.0 points and a team-leading 6.5 rebounds.
• Moore averaged 16.0 points and 8.3 rebounds while shooting .543 from the field and .909 at the line in the Vikings' home tournament (Nov. 22-24).
• Moore matched his career-high of 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a win over Loyola (11/22). It was his eighth career double-double.
• He has led the team in rebounding five times.
Â
OUR COUSIN VINNIE: If you remember the "Microwave", former Detroit Piston sixth-man Vinnie Johnson, then know that Portland State appears to have their own version in JR G DaShaun Wiggins. In his last four games, Wiggins has come off the bench to average 16.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in just 22 minutes per contest... Wiggins is second on the team in scoring (12.9) and three-pointers (10).
• Wiggins' big game was a 21-point, seven-rebound, three-assist, two-steal performance in a win over UC Davis (11/24).
Â
LET'S GET SMALL: Portland State Head Coach Tyler Geving has a wealth of talent at the guard position. As a result, he has frequently had three and four guards on the floor at a time. It has worked out well as he has had great production from JR Gs Tim Douglas, Andre Winston Jr., DaShaun Wiggins, Gary Winston and FR G Zach Gengler. A guard-heavy lineup has mandated that SR G Marcus Hall has had to play the "4" spot frequently. Hall is a strong defender and has handled that role well. In addition, all of the Viking guards have proven to be good rebounders.
Â
WINSTON HITTING THE MARK: JR G Andre Winston is averaging 9.5 points on .516 from the field and .880 at the free throw line this season. Those are nice improvements from his numbers last year of 7.0, .391 and .705.
Â
TASTY TIDBITS:
• Despite losing 76-60, PSU held Boise State 26 points below its nation's leading scoring average (102.0).
• During Portland State's preseason tournament, the Vikings came back from double-digit, second-half deficits to beat both Loyola and SIUE. The win over UC Davis was a little more conventional as the Vikings went wire-to-wire, leading by double-digits throughout the second half.
• When Portland State went 0-7 from three-point range against UNLV in the season opener (11/9) it marked the first time in PSU history that a Viking team failed to make a three in a game. Since 1996-97 when basketball was reinstated on the Park Blocks, PSU had made at least one three-pointer in 495 straight games. Fortunately, the Vikings came back to make 26 three-pointers over the last four games.
• The crowd of 13,148 at UNLV was the ninth-largest ever for a game in which the Portland State program has played.
• Portland State is 14-4 in home opening games since joining the Big Sky Conference in 1996-97.
• Portland State plays 17 regular season home games this year, the most ever scheduled in a single season.
• They are both from the state of Washington, had All-State credentials on their respective high school teams, and share the same last name. But JR Gs Gary Winston and Andre Winston Jr. are not related - it's just a happy coincidence.
• JR F Tiegbe Bamba is still rehabilitating from an achilles injury last season at Midland JC. His return date is still unknown.
• JR G Sebastian Suarez will redshirt this season due to complications with his transfer status. He needs to establish a year of residency and will be eligible to compete in the 2014-15 season. Also redshirting this season is JR G Kyler Shula.
• The Viking basketball program has graduated 16 of 17 players who have completed their eligibility under Head Coach Tyler Geving.
• Portland State is in its 18th season as a member of the Big Sky Conference and Division I. PSU played basketball from 1946-1981 before discontinuing the program. Basketball was reinstated for the 1996-97 season.
• Speaking of tasty, Portland State basketball fans will have the opportunity to Get Stuffed this winter at the Stott Center. Any fan purchasing a ticket for a seat at the Peter W. Stott Center will receive free concessions. That's right, all the food you can eat from the concession stand. Portland State students, with student tickets, will also take advantage of this promotion. It's just that simple. Buy your ticket and you eat for free. To get your tickets, call the Portland State box office at (503) 725-3307 or go to www.GoViks.com.
• And just for the heck of it, Kobayashi ate 12 hot dogs in 88 seconds at Portland State's game against Loyola on Nov. 22.
