CHENEY, Wash. – The Portland State Vikings kept pace in the Big Sky Conference with a four-set win over Eastern Washington Monday night in Cheney, Wash. The Vikings took the second Dam Cup match of the season by scores of 25-22, 25-16, 20-25, and 25-11.
The Vikings remain in second place in the Big Sky tied with Northern Arizona at 9-3. Both are two matches behind North Dakota which is 11-1 in conference play.Â
The Vikings (12-10 overall, 9-3 Big Sky Conference) put together another strong performance keeping the Eagles (7-16, 4-8) off balance most of the match. PSU posted its fifth double-digit service ace performance of the season with 10 led by junior middle blocker
Leigh-Ann Haataja's five. The Vikings hit .239 which improved their season mark to .206 while they held the Eagles to a .149 mark.Â
Senior setter
Garyn Schlatter posted her second consecutive double-double, seventh of the season, with 43 assists and 10 digs. She added four kills and four blocking assists in the match. It was her fourth double-doubles in the last six matches.
Senior outside hitter
Kaeli Patton recorded her sixth straight 10-plus kill performance with 12 against the Eagles.
Katie O'Brien posted her second double-digit kill performance of the season with 10 while hitting .500 (10-1-18) for the match.
Aubrey Mitchell also added 10 kills.
Portland State jumped out to a 7-3 lead early in the first set behind a trio of service aces. The Vikings kept their four-point lead through much of the set before the Eagles closed to the gap to just two points late. The Vikings finished out the set with a Mitchell kill taking it 25-22. O'Brien and Patton each had four kills as the Vikings hit .367 in the set.
The second set remained close before Eastern Washington took the lead for the first time since the opening point at 12-11. The Vikings quickly countered and retook the lead at 14-13. They kept their advantage through the rest of the set finishing on a 6-0 run to take it 25-16. Four Vikings tallied three kills each while PSU recorded five blocks in the set.
After making some adjustments at the intermission, the Eagles came out and took the third set 25-20. The Vikings lead early but the Eagles tied it at 9-9 before taking the lead and holding it the rest of the way.
Portland State decided that enough was enough and shut down Eastern Washington in the final set. The Vikings hit .400 as a team in the fourth while holding the Eagles to negative hitting percentage of -.065 (5-7-31). Again the Vikings spread the ball around with three players tallying three kills while only hitting two errors as a unit. PSU took the final set 25-11.
The Vikings finished out the month of October on a winning note as they begin November back out on the road when they travel to Montana State and Montana next weekend.
