KENNEWICK, Wash. – Portland State picked up its first doubles and singles win of the year and played competitive throughout, but eventually fell to Gonzaga, 6-1, in Kennewick, Wash., on Saturday morning.
 
After a disappointing doubles competition last weekend at then, No. 71, Oregon, the Viks saw closer scores against Gonzaga. The No. 1 team of Antoine Bechmann and Abhinav Mishra defeated Joey Brandt and Olivier Jamin, 8-6. The No. 2 and No. 3 positions also played close matches as Stratton Gilmore and Connor Gilmore were tripped up 8-5, while the No. 3 tandem of Lukas Kortus and Brent Wheeler fell, 8-6.
 
Down, 1-0 the Viks looked its singles play to try to catch a spark.
 
Gonzaga poured the pressure on in the match, taking a 2-0 lead after Vincente Varas downed Mishra in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.

Jamin made it 3-0, winning his match from the No. 2 position defeating Lukas Kortus, 6-1, 6-3.
 
PSU had reason for optimism when newcomer, Stratton Gilmore recorded his first victory as a member of the Viks, winning against Vladamir Mijatovic, 6-3, 6-4, cutting Gonzaga's lead to 3-1.
 
That optimism was short lived however as Gonzaga recorded the next three points as Hayden Smith downed Brent Wheeler, 6-1, 6-3, Nazal won a marathon match with Bechmann 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 and Levin Guillermo outlasted Connor Gilmore, 6-2, 7-5.
 
With the loss Portland State falls to 0-2 on the year, both of their losses coming on the road.
 
PSU will have an opportunity to record its first victory of the season, on its home court on Sunday afternoon, when it completes its weekend slate, taking on Willamette at 1 p.m. at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash.
