Volleyball Drops in Four Sets to Bowling Green

– The Portland State women's volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Bowling Green Friday afternoon at the BYU Nike Invitational in Provo, Utah.

The Vikings took the first set but dropped the final three to fall 3-1 by scores of 16-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-17.

The Vikings (3-5 overall) came out quickly in the first set and took it by a score of 25-16. PSU outhit Bowling Green .400-to-.147 in the first set recording 12 kills while recording only two errors on 25 attacks. Jaklyn Wheeler led the way for the Vikings in the set with four. She ended the match with 20 total kills while adding 11 digs for her seventh double-double of the season.

Bowling Green (2-4) turned things around in the second set by outhitting the Vikings .353-to-.129 and took the set 25-19. Bowling Green outhit Portland State .264-to.198 for the match.

With the match tied at one set apiece, the Vikings found themselves down early by a score of 8-4. They kept it close and tied it at 13-13. PSU then took a 20-18 advantage late in the set but two straight Bowling Green points tied it at 20-20. The two teams traded points but Bowling Green eventually took a two point lead at 24-22 before taking the set 25-23 to go up two sets to one.

Portland State fell behind early in the fourth set and could not keep it close falling behind by as much as 11 points late in the set at 22-11. Bowling Green finished out the set with a score of 25-17 to take the match.

Garyn Schlatter recorded 40 assists in the four-set match while Kasimira “Kasi” Clark recorded a team-best 16 digs in the match.

The Vikings will be back on the court on Saturday for two matches. They will take on Utah starting at 9 a.m. PT at the BYU Nike Invitational before taking on host team BYU at 6 p.m.

NOTES: Jaklyn Wheeler added her seventh double-double of the season with 20 kills and 11 digs … Wheeler posted her third 20-plus kill match of the season.
