CHENEY, Wash. – The Portland State Volleyball team moved to 2-0 in Big Sky Conference play Monday night after a sweep of Eastern Washington in Cheney, Wash.
Megan Ellis led the way with 11 kills as the Vikings took the first point of the 2012-13 installment of The Dam Cup.

Garyn Schlatter tallied 30 assists while Kasi Clark posted 21 digs helping the Vikings to the three set sweep of the Eagles by scores of 27-25, 25-17, and 25-17.
Eastern Washington (0-13 overall, 0-2 Big Sky) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first set before Portland State (6-7, 2-0) came back to tie the set at 9-9. The lead bounced back and forth for much of the set. The Eagles opened a three point advantage at 23-20 before the Vikings scored three straight to tie the set. Each team had at least one set point before the Vikings took the set 27-25.
The first stanza had nine score ties and five lead changes and proved to be the closest of three.
The Vikings took the lead early in the second at 2-1 and never looked back. PSU never went on a long run but went on several three point runs to open a 16-8 lead midway through the set. The Vikings then increased their lead to 21-16 before going on a 4-1 run to finish out the second, 25-17.
The third set was much like the second. Portland State took an early 7-3 lead before three straight points by the Eagles narrowed the gap to just one point at 7-6. That was as close as the Eagles would get in the set. The Vikings opened up an eight point lead at 19-11 before finishing out the set 25-17 to finish the sweep of the Eagles.
The Vikings outhit the Eagels .191-to-.061 which is the first time the Vikings have held an opponent to under .100 hitting. The Vikings are now 3-4 on the season in three-set matches after recording their fourth sweep of the season.
Monday's match also marked the first meeting between the two schools in the sports of volleyball, women's soccer, football, and men and women's basketball which make up The Dam Cup. Portland State won the previous two cups and is looking for a third straight. The Vikings and Eagles meet again this season in volleyball at the Peter W. Stott Center on Oct. 18.
The Vikings head back out on the road next weekend when they travel to the state of Montana to take on Montana on Friday followed by Montana State on Saturday.
