Vikings Fall in Straight Sets to Tigers, 3-0

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Portland State women's volleyball team fell in straight sets, 3-0, to the University of the Pacific Friday night at the Bankers Classic in Stockton, Calif.

Megan Ellis and Jaklyn Wheeler recorded their third double-doubles of the season for Portland State, but it was not enough as Pacific took the match 25-21, 27-25, 25-20.

The Vikings (1-3 overall) got out to a good start early in the first set and posted a four point lead over the Tigers (4-0) at 9-5. The Tigers fought back to tie it at 15-15 and then again at 18-18. It was at that point that Pacific rattled off five straight points to take a 23-18 lead. Pacific then took the first set 25-21 after finishing on a 7-3 run.

Neither team could get more than a one point lead through the first part of the second set until Pacific took a 7-5 lead. The Vikings played catch-up through much of the set falling behind and then tying it at 7-7, then at 12-12, and again at 14-14. The Vikings then took an 18-15 lead capping a 6-1 run. Two straight Pacific points brought the Tigers to within one at 18-17.

Following a PSU timeout, Aubrey Mitchell recorded a kill to give the Vikings a 19-17 lead. After the two teams traded points, Pacific scored two straight to tie it at 20-20, to cap a 5-2 run of its own. Pacific took a 23-22 lead before the Vikings took the lead back at 24-23. The Tigers tied it before taking a 25-24 lead to set up their first set point. After PSU tied it at 25-25, Pacific scored two straight to take the set and go up two sets to one.

After battling to a second set win, Pacific carried momentum into the third, opening with an 8-3 run. The Tigers increased their lead to as much as six points at 16-10, before the Vikings went on a 6-1 run to close the gap to just one at 17-16. After the teams traded points, Pacific took a four point lead at 22-18 with three straight points. The Tigers finished the third on a 6-2 run to take the set 25-20 and complete the sweep.

Pacific outhit Portland state .419-to-.244 in the third set and .227-to-.157 for the match.

Megan Birch and Jennifer Saunders paced the Tigers with 11 and 10 kills respectively while Hanna Clancey posted a double-double with 39 assists and 12 digs.

The Vikings will be back on the court tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. PT when they take on Northern Illinois.
