BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Portland State men's tennis team dropped duals to both Montana State Billings on Saturday night and Montana State on Sunday morning, by scores of 4-3 at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center in Bozeman, Mont.
Saturday – Montana State Billings 4, Portland State 3
The Vikings started the weekend off in Bozeman with a 4-3 loss at the hands of Montana State Billings on Saturday night. The Vikings took the doubles point by winning the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches by scores of 8-5 each.
After taking the doubles point, the Vikings would have trouble putting away singles matches.
Roman Margoulis took care of business as the Vikings' No. 1 singles player and won 6-0 and 6-1 to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead in the dual.
Mitch Somach dropped his No. 2 singles match by scores of 6-4 and 6-1 and
Zach Lubek dropped his No. 4 singles match to let the Yellowjackets tie the dual at 2-2.
Abhinav Mishra took back the lead for the Vikings with a three set match that took 3:21 victory at the No. 3 singles position. He dropped the first set 6-3 but then won the second set by a score of 7-5. The third set went all the way to a set tiebreaker, which he won 8-6 to take the third set 7-6.
After
Nate Chart dropped his No. 6 singles match by scores of 6-3 and 6-3, it was up to
Nick Fracchia who was the only Viking left on the court with the dual standing at 3-3.
Fracchia was down one game to two in the third set when the dual came down to his court. He dropped the first set 6-2 but then rebounded to win the second set 6-3. He fought but could not win the third set and dropped the set 6-3 and the Vikings fell 4-3 to Montana State Billings.
Sunday – Montana State 4, Portland State 3
The Vikings looked to turn things around on Sunday aginst Big Sky Conference opponent Montana State but the Vikings fell in the dual, again by a score of 4-3.
Portland State swept Montana State in doubles play. Maroulis and Somach won 9-8 in a tiebreaker as did Lubek and Fracchia. Mishra and
Alec Marx won 8-5.
The Vikings soon lost their one point advantage when Lubek and Mishra lost to open singles play. Somach tied the dual at 2-2 with his win at No. 2 singles by scores of 6-3 and 7-5 to earn his first Big Sky Conference win of the season.
Margoulis then lost 6-3 and 6-1 while Marx lost 7-5, 3-6 and 6-1 to give the Bobcats the 4-2 lead and the dual win.
Fracchia picked up the second singles win for the Vikings. He dropped the first set 6-4 but then won the next two sets 6-2 and 7-5 to end the dual.
Portland State now visits its cross-town rival Portland on March 10 at 10 a.m. PT and then hosts Weber State at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash. on March 11 at 12 p.m.
