MORAGA, Calif. – Karmen Holladay belted a pair of home runs and
Raya Johnson earned her first collegiate victory in the circle over Sacramento State to help Portland State split its final two games at the PCSC Crossover Tournament on Sunday.
The Vikings dropped a 2-1 decision to host Saint Mary's in their first game, before Holladay and Johnson teammed up to lift PSU over Sac State, 3-2, in the second contest.
In the opener, the VIkings never could quite solve Saint Mary's pitcher Jessica Lemmon, and saw the game end in a rather unique fashion. Portland State managed just two hits off of Lemmon, getting a solo home run from Holladay in the sixth inning and a pinch-hit single from
Maggie Sholian in the seventh.
Saint Mary's got on the scoreboard first via Christine Torrise's leadoff home run in the second inning, then they added an insurance run in the next frame when Rebecca Sabatini doubled home her sister, Brittany Sabatini.
The Vikings attempted a comeback in the seventh after Sholian singled with two outs, but the game ended moments later on a unusual play.
Danai Martin, who had entered the game as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the sixth, reached on an infield single, but was called out after an appeal by the Gaels because the substitution was never reported to the home plate umpire.
Lemmon (2-1) struck out five and walked two for the Gaels. Brittany Sabatini and Mandy Camuso both hit 2-for-3.
Anna Bertrand took the loss for the Viks, falling to 5-3 after giving up six hits, two runs and one walk with six strikeouts over six innings.
In the second game, it was the Hornets who struck first with a pair of runs on two hits and a PSU error in the bottom of the first. Portland State then tied it up in the third on
Becca Bliss' two-run single to right field.
The score remained knotted at 2-2 until Holladay delivered her team leading fifth home run of the season, a solo blast to center field, with two outs in the sixth. That was all Portland State would need as Johnson worked a quick 1-2-3 top of the seventh to preserve her first win as a Viking.
In seven innings, Johnson (1-1) gave up five hits, one earned run and five walks, while striking out four. After allowing four singles during the first two innings, she gave up just one more the rest of the way.
The Vikings managed only four hits, but two of them – Bliss' two-run single and Holladay's home run – were big ones.
Kayla Norrie and
Brittany Hendrickson also singled for PSU.
Sac State's Taylor Stroud (4-1) went the distance in the circle, walking one and striking out three.
PSU went 3-1 at the tournament and is now 7-7 on the season. Next weekend they travel to Riverside, Calif., to play five games at the Highlander Classic hosted by UC Riverside.
