Vikings Break Through with 5-2 Win Over Redhawks

VANCOUVER, Wash.
– The Portland State men's tennis team broke through Friday night with its first dual win of the season. After getting swept in doubles play, the Vikings won five of the six singles matches to take the dual by a score of 5-2.
 
The Redhawks (1-8 overall) swept the Vikings (1-7) in doubles play but each match was highly contested. Mitch Somach and Alec Marx fell just short by a score of 8-6 as did Zach Lubek and Nick Fracchia by a score of 8-5.
 
Roman Margoulis and Abhinav Mishra, playing as the Vikings' No. 2 doubles duo, took the match all the way to a tiebreaker. They fell in the match by a score of 9-8 after dropping the tiebreaker, 7-5.
 
With the Redhawks taking the early 1-0 lead, the dual turned to singles play. Marx earned his first singles win of the Portland State career in straight sets 7-5 and 6-1 to tie the dual at 1-1.
 
Lubek was the next to finish and fell in three sets. He lost the first set by a score of 6-4 but then took the second set by a score of 6-1. The third set got away from him and he lost it by a score of 6-1 giving Seattle a 2-1 lead.
 
The Vikings then rattled off four singles wins to take the match. Margoulis tied the match at 2-2 with a win at the No. 1 position. He won the first set 7-6 after winning a tiebreaker 7-5. He then won the second set 6-3.
 
Somach dropped his first set by a score of 7-5 but then took the second set by a score of 6-4 forcing a decisive third set. He rolled to his third singles win of the season with a 6-2 third set.

Mishra then clinched the Vikings first win of the season in another three set match. Le dropped the first set by a score of 6-3 and then won the second and third sets by scores of 6-4 each.
 
Fracchia, playing as the Vikings' No. 6, picked up his second consecutive win of the season in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1, to bring the final dual score to 5-2.
 
On the day, three singles matches went to a decisive third set and the Vikings lost their doubles matches by a cumulative total of six games.
 
It's a quick turnaround after a late finish at Club Green Meadows for the Vikings. They are back at it at 12 p.m. Saturday with a conference dual with Eastern Washington who is 5-3 overall and 2-0 this season. They fell to Oregon by a score of 6-1 Friday night in Eugene, Ore.
