PORTLAND – The Vikings (14-8, 10-1 Big Sky Conference) took the second installment of “The Dam Cup” Thursday night in a sweep of Eastern Washington (0-22, 0-11) at the Peter W. Stott Center. Junior OH
Aubrey Mitchell led the Vikings with 11 kills while adding a season-high six blocks.
Portland State held Eastern Washington to a negative hitting percentage at -.010 (23-24-105) in the match en route to the sweep by scores of 25-16, 25-16, and 25-18. It was the first time the Vikings have held an opponent to a negative hitting percentage and the first time since holding Weber State to a -.031 hitting percentage last season.
"Our goal tonight was to keep our foot on the gas an not let them get any easy points," head coach
Michael Seemann said following the sweep. "We wanted to make sure they earned their points."
PSU tallied six service aces in the match;
Dominika Kristinikova tallied three. The Vikings also posted 12 blocks as a team which is the second most in a match this season and the most since tallying 15 at Montana. Sophomore MB
Katie O'Brien tied her season best with eight to go along with Mitchell's six.
"We continue to put pressure on teams with our serving," Seemann added. "Tonight we did a good job of closing the loop, getting them out of system and then scoring in transition. That's how you hold your serve and get real points. We did a good job of that tonight."
The Vikings did not have a particularly good night hitting the ball finishing the night .177 (39-19-113).
The Vikings took the first set by a score of 25-16 after holding the Eagles to a hitting percentage of .000 in the set. PSU jumped out to an early 7-1 lead. The Eagles scored six straight to tie it at 7-all but that was the closest they would get as the Vikings rolled to the first set victory.
Portland State took the second set, again by a score of 25-16. After the set was tied at 1-all, PSU opened up a four-point lead at 5-1. They extended their lead at 20-10 before finishing out the set.
PSU fell behind for the first time in the match at 7-6 in the third set. After trading points, the Vikings opened a 15-10 lead before finishing out the sweep with a 25-18 victory in the third.

Garyn Schlatter tallied a match-high 32 assists and narrowly missed her seventh double-double with eight digs. Libero Kasi Clark tallied 19 digs and four assists in the match.
The Vikings are back at home this Saturday for a 7 p.m. match with Sacramento State (7-13, 3-7). The Hornets are coming off a three-set loss at Santa Clara earlier in the week.
