VANCOUVER, Wash.
Roman Margoulis did not drop a game in the singles number one matchup but the Vikings fell to the Montana State Bobcats by a score of 6-1. The non-conference matchup was the first home match of the year for the Vikings at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash.

“It was really good for our guys to get out here and play well against a conference opponent in a non-conference match this early in the season,” head coach Jay Sterling said. “We have a young team this year and it just proves to them that they can compete in this conference.”

Zach Lubek and Nick Frachhia won their doubles match on the day by a score of 8-7. The duo came from behind and forced the tiebreaker, which they won by a score of 7-3 to take the match. The Vikings would drop the first point of the overall match by losing two of the three doubles matches.

The team of Margoulis and Abhinav Mishra, playing as the number one doubles group, dropped their math by a close core of 8-6.

Margoulis drew the overall match score to 1-1 with his straight set (6-0, 6-0) defeat of the Bobcats' number one singles player and was the first singles match to finish.

Three of the next five singles matches went to a tiebreaking third set with Mishra and Alec Marx, playing in the number two and three positions respectively, losing their first sets but then winning the second to force a third. Lubek won his first but then dropped the second match to go to three matches.

The Vikings played well to force the third sets but they could not finish off their matches to add to their overall point totals as the Vikings dropped all three of the third set matches.

“We lost to Montana State 5-to-2 last spring but I thought that we were much closer to actually winning the match today,” Sterling said. “We were in more matches and forced more third set tiebreakers.”

The Vikings now head out on the road for matches at Utah State on Saturday, Feb. 4 and their conference-opening match at Idaho State on Sunday, Feb. 5.
