PSU Returns to Big Sky Play With Match at Northern Arizona

PORTLAND, Ore.
- With only a single match this weekend, the Portland State women's tennis team will travel to Flagstaff, Ariz., for a Big Sky Conference contest against Northern Arizona Sunday April 10.

The Vikings had a home and away weekend, hosting SeattleU Friday April 1 and taking on host Washington State April 3 in Pullman. The Viks were able to nab two points in singles with wins from No. 1 Yuki Sugiyama and No. 4 Marti Pellicano, but were unable to capture the all-important doubles point, despite a win from Sugiyama and partner Anya Dalkin. PSU would drop the match to SU, 5-2.

The Cougars would prove to be one of the Viks toughest opponents of the year as they swept PSU, 7-0.

The win for Sugiyama against the Redhawks secured her 10th win of the season. She became the first women's player to accomplish the feat since since 2008, when then-freshman Dalkin won 10 matches.

The Vikings have been without the services of  senior Caitlin Stocking since Feb. 25, when the Vikings defeated Northern Colorado, 4-3. She has been rehabbing for some time and should return to the team next weekend.

Northern Arizona is 8-9 in 2011 and owns a 3-1 Big Sky record. The Jacks only loss of the season occurred March 27 at No. 46 Sacramento State, a 6-1 drubbing by the Hornets. NAU's last contest was April 2, a 7-0 sweep of Northern Colorado.

The Lumberjack lineup has not deviated much this season, as only seven players have appeared in singles contests. Osi Golovics and Malia Wahinepio lead the team in overall wins at 10. Golovics plays at the No. 2 spot, while Wahinepio has bounced between the three and four spot and has seven wins at No. 4.

Doubles have been a strong point for NAU as three pairs have at least eight wins, including the No. 1 duo of Golovics and Edit Suhajda. The match will be played on NAU's indoor courts.

Portland State will close its season next weekend, when the Vikings host Sacramento State April 15 and take on Eastern Washington in Cheney, April 16.
