Vikings Close Out Stanford Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. - The Portland State track team closed the Stanford Invitational this afternoon. Senior Karene King ran a career outdoor best of 24.19 seconds to finish seventh overall at the meet. The Vikings faired well on the national stage and will return to Oregon next week to compete at the Willamette Invitational April 2-3.

King, the British Virgin Islands national record holder in the indoor 200-meters, surpassed her personal-outdoor best by .03 seconds and still remains No. 3 all-time in the Portland State record book. No. 2 Merit Stilson recorded a 24.00 flat in 1979 and held the school's record for 30 years.

Junior Anaiah Rhodes and senior Malissa Anthony also competed in the 200-meters with Rhodes recording a personal-best 25.26 and Anthony running a 25.92.

King, Rhodes, Geronne Black and Joenisha Vinson opened day two for the Viks and ran the 4x100-meters relay. The quartet recorded a time of 46.19 seconds to finish 5th overall at the meet.

A day after competing in the long jump, senior Mikeya Nicholson competed in the top-flight of the triple jump and finished ninth with a bound of 37 feet, four inches. Nicholson finished tied-for-seventh in her flight of the long jump yesterday, jumping 17-4.25.

Junior Tony Crisofulli went on to finish 22nd overall in the 800-meters and seventh in his heat, running a 1:52.52. Times were significantly low in all races, as professional David Torrance won the event with a 1:50.47. Crisofulli qualified for the regional last year when he recorded a 1:49.76.

The Vikings will return to action April 2-3 to compete at the Willamette Invitational.
