PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland State men's tennis team will look to start the Big Sky season 1-0 and get back above .500 this weekend with matches against Sacramento State and SeattleU. The Viks conference opening match will take place Feb. 10 at 2 p.m., and will be played at Club Green Meadows.
The Viking men are on a two-match win streak after 7-0 sweeps over Lewis & Clark and Gonzaga, with two Vikings earn their first collegiate duel wins,
Roman Margoulis and
Mitch Somach. It was the first time since March of 2009 that the Vikings had recorded back-to-back 7-0 wins and the first time the Vikings defeated the Zags.
The Viks will welcome the two-time defending Big Sky Champion Hornets to the Rose City Thursday afternoon and will face them in Vancouver's Club Green Meadows. Sac State is 2-2 currently with its only blemishes coming against No. 6 Stanford (7-0) and No. 2 USC (6-1). Last Friday, the Hornets defeated both Weber State and Idaho State to even up their overall record and take grasp of the Big Sky lead.
The Redhawks will have a busy weekend ahead of them, playing four matches in two days. SeattleU will play Saturday morning at Oregon and take on PSU in a Saturday matinee, starting at 4 p.m., at Club Green Meadows.
SU features a 1-3 record this year, with its only victory coming against Northern Colorado, 5-2, on Jan. 28. The Redhawks and the Vikings have shared two common opponents this season in Idaho and Gonzaga. SeattleU lost to the Zags, 4-3, and also lost to the Vandals, 7-0.
Portland State will make a trip to Utah next weekend to face the Utes, Feb. 19, and will conclude its trip Feb. 20 at Weber State.
