Oregon Holds Off Vikings Late, 79-70

Box Score
Eugene, OR - Portland State put a late scare into the Oregon Ducks before finally falling, 79-70, at Matthew Knight Arena.

PSU's loss was its second straight on the road and dropped the Vikings to 5-4 on the season. Oregon improved to 6-2, including 5-0 at home.

Portland State controlled the tempo early and led for most of the first half. The Vikings went up 20-16 on a driving layup by Charles Odum with 9:10 left in the half. But, EJ Singler led an 18-7 Oregon rally the rest of the half, giving the Ducks a 34-27 halftime lead.

The Vikings were hindered by two early fouls on Chehales Tapscott that limited him to just six first-half minutes.

Singler had 11 points at halftime as Oregon shot 47% and committed only two turnovers.

Garrett Sim did the early damage in the second half for the Ducks, hitting three three-pointers, the last of which pushed Oregon's lead to 61-47 with 8:14 to play.

PSU rallied back behind Tapscott and Lateef McMullan who combined for 23 points in the second half. A McMullan jumper with 4:16 left cut it to 67-61 Ducks.

Michael Harthun hit a three from the deep corner with 1:25 to play and it was 71-68. Then, Oregon's  Devoe Joseph responded by hitting a tough, driving shot to hold the Vikings off.

"That was a tough shot. I thought we played pretty good defense. We just needed to get one stop. We get one there and the game changes," said Head Coach Tyler Geving.

Joseph tacked on six free throws in the final minute to put the game away.

Tapscott led the Vikings with 16 points and five rebounds. McMullan tied his season-high with 14 points. Odum scored 12 point with five assists.

Singler led the Ducks with 19 points and seven rebounds. Joseph and Sim each scored 13.

PSU committed only 12 turnovers, but the Ducks took advantage, scoring 20 points off those mistakes. Otherwise, the statistics were fairly even across the board.

"I was pleased with our energy and effort. We played hard, but they capitalized on our turnovers, that is something we have got to clean up," said Geving.
