PORTLAND, Ore. – Behind another double-double from
Whitney Phillips, the Portland State volleyball squad won its fourth straight match with a sweep of visiting Weber State on Friday night at the Stott Center.
Set scores were 25-21, 25-18, 25-14.
Phillips tallied 16 kills and 10 digs for her team-leading eighth double-double and five Vikings finished with at least five kills.
Garyn Schlatter chipped in 23 assists, nine digs and a pair of aces, while
Diana Villalpando led all players with 13 digs.
"I'm very proud of the all-around effort we had tonight," said Vikings Head Coach
Michael Seemann. "We played well both offensively and defensively. I felt like Garyn did a good job of attacking and distributing the ball, and I was pleased to see the contributions we got from the young kids."
The Vikings (7-6, 3-0 Big Sky) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first frame, but watched as Weber State rallied to within a point, 5-4. Three kills by Phillips fueled a five-point run for PSU and they held a 10-4 lead before the Wildcats crawled back into it again. A Portland State service error brought Weber State within 13-12 and they later tied it up at 17-17 on a Vikings' attack error. Phillips answered with back-to-back kills and PSU held on from there for the win.
Weber State took an early 3-1 advantage in the second set, but when they committed an attack error seven points later, the Vikings went up 6-5 and never looked back. Portland State used two five-point swings, with the second run giving them their largest lead at 19-10.
After the Wildcats took an 8-7 lead in set three on a kill by Elli Graff, Portland State went on a 7-0 run to take control.
With the Vikings comfortably in the lead, Seemann was able to give his underclassmen plenty of playing time late in the match. In fact, Portland State finished the night with three true freshmen (
Aubrey Mitchell,
Kaeli Patton,
Cara Olden) and one redshirt frosh (Schlatter) on the floor.
The Vikings finished the night with a .275 hitting percentage and eight service aces. They held Weber State to just a .061 hitting mark. PSU also outdug the Wildcats by 22 (50 to 28), their largest margin this season.
Portland State next hosts Idaho State tomorrow at 7 p.m.
