SAN JOSE -- Portland State squandered a 14-8 lead in set five at San Jose State on Friday night and fell to the Spartans, 3-2, after getting swept by Santa Clara earlier in the morning.
The Vikings (3-6) have now lost four straight matches, their longest losing streak since 2003.
San Jose State (2-6) defeated the Vikings 25-19, 15-25, 25-21, 16-25, 16-14, while Santa Clara swept PSU 25-12, 25-20, 25-13.
In the opening stanza against San Jose State, the Spartans broke free from a 9-9 tie by scoring 10 of the next 15 points. Three straight attack errors by San Jose State and a kill by
Lana Zielke brought the Vikings back within a point at 19-18, but SJSU closed out the set on a 6-1 run.
Portland State flipped the tables on the Spartans in set two and ran away for the 25-15 victory. Down 8-7, the Vikings would score 12 of the next 17 points for a 19-12 advantage, with
Alexa Rosendale fueling the run with four kills.
The Spartans led the entire way in set three and had a 19-10 lead after a kill by Sarah Griest. Portland State mounted a comeback, getting to within 24-21, but it was too little, too late.
PSU controlled set four and then had it at match point, 14-8, in the fifth frame after a kill by
Whitney Phillips. From there, though, they faltered. Alex Akana slammed home back-to-back kills to ignite a 8-0 run that gave SJSU the comback victory.
Phillips (15 kills, 13 digs) and Rosendale (11 kills, 18 digs) both had double-doubles,
Christie Hamilton registered 13 kills and a .407 attack percentage,
Cara Olden recorded a career-high six blocks, and
Diana Villalpando finished with 21 digs.
Garyn Schlatter chipped in 40 assists and eight digs.
For San Jose State, Hanah Blume racked up 20 kills, 19 digs and a .375 hitting percentage, Akana had 12 kills and hit .320, and Katie Turner tallied 24 digs.
In their morning match against Santa Clara (5-2), not much went right for the Vikings. They committed the same number of errors as kills to finish with a .000 hitting percentage, while giving up eight aces and getting outblocked 12.0-7.0.
Phillips led the Vikings with 15 kills and Zielke had a match-high six blocks.
Kaleigh Durket and Dana Knudsen each had 11 kills to lead the Broncos. Knudsen hit .600 as Santa Clara finished with a .326 hitting percentage.
Portland State closes out its two-day Bay Area swing with a match against Cal State Northridge tomorrow. First serve is set for 1 p.m., at San Jose State.
NOTES: Rosendale's 18 digs vs. San Jose State were a new career-high. She also had a career-high two service aces ... Zielke contributed nine kills against SJSU ... the Vikings tallied nine team blocks to San Jose State's three, the first time this season they have outblocked an opponent ... PSU had not lost more than three matches in a row since 2003, when they suffered through a six-match losing streak.
