SEATTLE –
A solid all-around team effort lifted Portland State to a 3-0 sweep over Mercer at The Invitational At Seattle on Saturday morning as the Vikings opened up 2-0 for the third time in four years under Head Coach Michael Seemann.

Portland State (2-0) had little trouble getting past the Bears, sweeping the match by scores of 25-15, 25-16, 25-17.

The Vikings hit .333 on the day, while limiting Mercer to just a .093 attack percentage. Whitney Phillips tallied her second double-double of the young season with 19 kills and 10 digs for PSU.

"It's great to open up the year with a pair of wins away from home," said Seemann. "We got a lot of contributions from different players today and that is encouraging to see. We are going to need different people to step up and tonight showed that other players are going to do that."

Portland State never trailed against the Bears and the match was tied just once, at 1-1 in set three.

Christie Hamilton added seven kills, three block assists and hit .538 for the Viks, while Nicole Bateham led the squad with 13 digs. Dominika Kristinikova and Garyn Schlatter had 20 and 16 assists, respectively.

For Mercer, Krista Hurley registered seven kills and Charlotte Harris led all players with 21 digs. The Bears fell to 0-3 on the year.

The Vikings are back in action on Tuesday when they host Oregon State at 7 p.m.

NOTES: Phillips had all three of PSU's service aces ... Freshmen Cara Olden and Kaeli Patton, and junior transfer Alex Van Dyke all registered the first kills of their PSU careers ... Phillips hit .316 and Lana Zielke (five kills) hit .364 ... this was the first meeting between Portland State and Mercer ... the Bears, who are located in Macon, Georgia, had two players from Gresham, Oregon on their roster.
