Eugene, OR - Portland State never found its touch while Oregon finally was able to resulting in a 68-49 non-conference win for the Ducks at McArthur Court.
The Vikings shot just .296 for the game, including 8-27 from the field in each half. Oregon shot .415 for the game, but were 15-32 in the second half for a .469 mark.
With the loss, Portland State's three-game winning streak came to an end and the Vikings dropped to 4-2 on the season. The Ducks improved to 5-3.
The Vikings rebounded well and pushed the pace early, but couldn't convert shots, making only one of their first nine. Still, the Ducks weren't much better, hitting three of their first 14 and leading only 6-4 after two media timeouts.
Oregon finally got going and built an 11-point lead at 25-14 with 4:56 left in the half. An 8-2 run by the Vikings going into halftime made it 27-22 Ducks.
In a painfully inefficient first half, PSU made just 8-27 shots (.296) and committed 12 turnovers. The good news was the Vikings were still in the game. Oregon was 12-33 shooting (.364) and never got to the free throw line.
Some shots started to fall in the second half. PSU got as close as 44-41 with 10:04 left to play on a
Melvin Jones three-pointer. But the Ducks went on a 18-3 run over the next five minutes to take command of the game at 62-44.
"We had an open three when we were down 44-41 and missed it," said Viking Coach
Tyler Geving. "I felt if we kept it close right there, they might get tight. But once we got to 10 points (behind) the Ducks got a little looser and shots starting coming easier for them."
Joevan Catron led Oregon with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Garrett Sim had 14 points.
Chris Harriel had 12 points and a career-high nine rebounds for the Vikings.
PSU was 16-54 from the field, 3-16 from three-point range, and 14-18 at the line.
