SEATTLE –
Portland State hung with the nation's seventh-ranked team early on, but in the end, the No. 15 national seed Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine's size proved to be too much in an NCAA tournament first round match at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.

Hawai`i tallied 11 blocks and held Portland State to just .072 hitting in taking the match 25-23, 25-19, 25-8.

The Vikings gave Hawai`i fits in the opening frame, holding the lead four times. The Rainbow Wahine scored four of the first five points, benefiting from three PSU attack errors. But, Portland State didn't back down and took its first lead, 10-9, on a bad swing by Hawai`i. Whitney Phillips gave the Viks a 12-10 advantage with a kill and later made it 21-20 with another putdown from the left pin.

Hawai`i answered, though, with three straight points and eventually won the set on a kill by Chanteal Satele, who finished with 12 in the contest.

After Hawai`i opened up a 8-3 lead in the second set, Portland State began to get back on track. They closed to within 10-9 on a UH service error and again trailed by one, 14-13, after another Phillips' kill. The Rainbow Wahine took over from there with a 5-0 run and PSU wouldn't seriously threaten the rest of the set or the match.

In their second trip to the NCAA DI tournament, Portland State put a scare into Hawai`i, who came in as the number 15 seed in the 64-team tourney. The Rainbow Wahine (29-2) advanced to the second round for the 13th straight year and now are 70-25 all-time in the tournament under 36th-year Head Coach Dave Shoji.

In her final match as a Viking, Phillips tallied eight kills and 11 digs. Fellow senior Diana Villalpando led the team with 12 digs, while Lana Zielke (six kills, three blocks) and Christie Hamilton (five kills) also played their final game for Portland State.

Two-time WAC Player of the Year and 2009 first team All-American Kanani Danielson paced UH with 13 kills and hit .333. Brittany Hewitt, who came into the match leading the country in blocking at 1.67 blocks per set, racked up seven.

Portland State concluded its season at 21-9, its fourth straight 20-win season under Michael Seemann, and the sixth consecutive season overall they have reached that mark.
