FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. –
Whitney Phillips had a double-double and five Portland State players had at least seven kills as the Vikings swept Northern Arizona in Flagstaff on Thursday evening.

Portland State won its 13th-straight match over the Lumberjacks, winning by scores of 25-13, 26-24, 25-21. It was also the Vikings fifth-straight win overall, matching their longest winning streak of the season.

Phillips led all players with 12 kills while also adding 11 digs for her team leading 15th double-double. The Vikings also got nine kills from Lana Zielke and eight from Megan Ellis.

"I felt like tonight the distribution was excellent. Garyn (Schlatter) did a great job of getting our hitters a lot of good looks offensively," said Vikings Head Coach Michael Seemann. "The group stayed poised defensively and that was a big key. Megan had a great night for us, keeping us steady and in system. All around it was a good group effort."

PSU opened the match in spectacular fashion, hitting .556 and committing just two attack errors on 27 swings in easily taking the opening frame. Two straight service aces by Schlatter, followed by back-to-back kills by Phillips, gave the Vikings a 20-9 lead late in the set.

The Vikings jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second stanza, but watched as NAU rallied to tie it up at 9-9. The lead went back and forth from there and with the set even at 24-all, Schlatter had a kill and then Portland State won it on a Lumberjacks' attack error.

Northern Arizona took control out of the break, leading 4-0 after PSU had three bad swings early on. Portland State eventually came back to tie it at 11-11, and much like the second set, from there the teams traded the lead. The Vikings finally broke free from the last tie, 21-21, and scored the final four points of the set to sweep the match.

Schlatter ended the night with seven kills, 31 assists and the two aces, while Aubrey Mitchell chipped in seven more kills.

Northern Arizona (9-15, 5-9 Big Sky) received nine kills from both Lexi Sullivan and Jen Wilson. Wilson also added a match-high 15 digs.

Portland State's win sets up a showdown with first-place Northern Colorado on Saturday in Greeley. The Bears swept visiting Eastern Washington tonight and sit at 13-1 in the Big Sky, one game up on the Vikings, who are 12-2. PSU (17-8) handed UNC (22-5) its only conference loss back on Oct. 15, in Portland.

"Getting the victory tonight was a good start to a tough weekend," said Seemann. "This trip is certainly one of the toughest during the conference season. We are definitely looking forward to Saturday's match."
