PORTLAND, Ore. – In their final tuneup before closing out the rest of the season against Big Sky foes, the Portland State volleyball team cruised to a straight-sets victory over visiting Seattle on Thursday night in non-conference action at the Stott Center.
PSU (9-7) hit a season-best .432 in winning by scores of 25-13, 25-20, 25-13.
The Vikings trailed just twice all night when Seattle scored the first point of sets one and three.
In the opening set, PSU held a 6-5 lead before taking control behind the play of star outside hitter
Whitney Phillips. The senior had four kills and an ace during a run that gave the Vikings a 15-9 advantage.
Garyn Schlatter later served four-straight points to make it 22-12.
The Vikings hit a remarkable .600 in the set, committing just two errors on 30 swings.
Portland State opened up an 8-3 lead in the second stanza, then held off a late Redhawks' rally.
Seattle (8-11) scored the first point of set three, then watched as PSU scored seven of the next eight. Up 19-11,
Lana Zielke served four points in a row, including an ace, to essentially seal the victory.
Megan Ellis led the Vikings in kills for the second straight match, tallying 14 and hitting .355, while Phillips recorded 13 kills, 11 digs and a .478 hitting percentage.
Lana Zielke added eight kills on 11 swings and didn't have an error for a .727 mark.
"We never let up tonight. We competed consistently throughout points," said PSU head coach
Michael Seemann. "One of our goals all year long has been to play one point at a time and I felt like we did that tonight."
Seattle, which hit .193, received nine kills from Cristin Richards.
