PORTLAND, Ore. –
Whitney Phillips and Megan Ellis combined for 25 kills and Portland State hit .396 in sweeping Eastern Washington Saturday night at the Stott Center in Big Sky Conference volleyball action.

Set scores were 25-15, 25-14, 25-16.

The Vikings won the inaugural volleyball match in the new Dam Cup rivalry series that pits the two schools against each other in five sports.

Portland State (10-7, 5-1 Big Sky) won its 11th-straight home conference match behind yet another outstanding offensive performance. Two nights after hitting a season-high .432 in a sweep of Seattle, the Vikings committed only nine errors for their second-highest hitting percentage in 2010.

"I think our first contact on serve receive is what is helping us a ton. Diana (Villalpando) is doing a great job of keeping us balanced and Garyn (Schlatter) is doing a much better job of distributing the ball around and giving a lot of hitters a lot of good windows in terms of being able to put balls away," said Vikings head coach Michael Seemann.

The Vikings also had just nine attack errors on Thursday against Seattle, giving them single digits in two matches in the same season for the first time in their NCAA Division I era (1996-present).

In front of one of the loudest crowds of the season, Portland State took awhile to get on track out of the gate. Eastern Washington led 4-2 after a Vikings' attack error, but PSU countered and led 8-6 on an ace by Ellis. The Vikings slowly pulled away and used five-straight points during one stretch to take an 18-11 advantage. With the score at set point, Schlatter sneaked one by the Eagles from her setter position and the Viking faithful erupted in applause.

The Vikings carried the momentum over into the next set, jumping out to a 9-2 lead, including scoring the first three points on kills by Phillips. They led 20-8 on Phillips' fifth kill of the set and the senior later slammed home the set-winning point with a swing from the leftside.

Phillips paced PSU's offense with 15 kills while hitting .333, and Ellis tallied 10 kills and a .364 mark. Both players had nine digs.

Villalpando led all players with 11 digs, and Schlatter had 29 assists, eight digs, seven kills and hit .700.

For the Eagles, Alysha Cook hit .412 and registered nine kills.

Portland State is back in action next week when it hosts Northern Colorado on Friday and Northern Arizona on Saturday.

NOTES: PSU has won four in a row over Eastern Washington ... the Eagles, who hit .125, fell to 3-13, 2-4 Big Sky ... PSU outblocked EWU, 5-3 ... the Vikings had seven aces, getting two apiece from Ellis, Phillips and Dominika Kristinikova ... Portland State has outhit its opponents in nine straight matches.
