Saldana Scores, but Wolfpack too much for Vikings

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State Vikings offered glimpses of dominant game management on Sunday, but could not counter two offensive spurts from the Nevada Wolfpack in a 4-1 loss at Hillsboro Stadium.

While the first half saw the Vikings (0-5-0) control the pace of play, it was the Wolfpack (2-2-0) that capitalized on their early opportunities. After a handball inside of the box during the 22nd minute, Jasmine Navarro delivered her second goal of the season on the ensuing penalty kick – a top-shelf effort offering little chance for a stop.

Nevada quickly expanded their lead. Less than three minutes later Carmen Coronado buried her first goal of the season in the right-side netting off a Daniela Mayorga-Torres pass into the box to make it 2-0.

After Nevada pushed their advantage to 4-0 in the second half on two goals from Leslie Jacobo Duran, the Vikings tallied their first goal of the year. Aliayha Saldana created space by beating two defenders on the left side of the box and booted the Vikings' lone goal home from 10 yards.

Portland State finished the game strong by controlling the ball for a majority of the final 20 minutes, but their late energy came too late.

The Vikings return to action in a week, hosting NCAA Division II Western Oregon at Hillsboro Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 6 p.m.
