BEAVERTON, Ore. – The Portland State men's tennis team turned in an impressive performance in Sunday's home finale, defeating Idaho, 6-1, at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
The result marked just the second win over the Vandals in program history and the first since 2019.
Idaho (7-14, 2-3) was picked third in the 2026 Big Sky preseason poll. Portland State (6-13, 2-4) was selected eighth.
You wouldn't have known it Sunday.
A fired-up Vikings squad controlled momentum throughout doubles, despite Idaho taking the opening match at No. 3, 6-4. Portland State responded on the remaining courts, both with 6-4 wins of their own. Luca Prino and Edoardo Cravanzola evened things with a defeat of Noe De Col and Mikolaj Lis at No. 2, before Aarjun Pandit and Maas Schotanus secured the point with a victory over Chetanna Amadike and Gabriel Moroder at No. 1.
The Vikings built on that start in singles, winning five straight matches to seal the dual. Prino quickly added to Portland State's lead with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lis at No. 3. Playing in his first Big Sky singles match, Luke Lu followed with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over De Col at No. 6 to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead. The clincher came at the No. 1 spot, where Pandit capped his undefeated home season with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Amadike.
With the match decided, the Vikings kept rolling. Schotanus earned his sixth win of the year and first in conference play, defeating Moroder 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2. Ignacio Ruiz closed out Portland State's scoring with a 7-5, 7-6 victory over Valentin Gisel at No. 5.
Idaho picked up the final point at No. 4, where Eric Wang edged Cravanzola, 7-5, 7-5.
With two regular-season matches remaining, the Vikings have their sights set on a Big Sky Tournament appearance, something they've missed the past four seasons. Sunday's win moved them back into the hunt, placing them fourth in the conference standings. Though several matches remain across the Big Sky, the Vikings will likely have a chance to clinch a spot in the tournament when they return to action Thursday, April 16, in their Big Sky finale at Sacramento State.
