Vikings Take Momentum to Boise for Blue Collar Classic

PORTLAND, Ore. – Coming off a three-win weekend in Honolulu, the Portland State softball team returns to action this weekend with another three-day, five-game tournament at the Blue Collar Classic in Boise, Idaho March 5-7. The Vikings will face Cal Baptist, St. Thomas and Boise State across three days at Huber Field at Dona Larsen Park.

The Vikings (6-9) open the tournament Thursday with a doubleheader against Cal Baptist (11:00 AM PT / 12:00 PM MT) and Boise State (4:00 PM PT / 5:00 PM MT). They'll face St. Thomas on Friday (3:00 PM PT / 4:00 PM MT) before a rematch with the Broncos (5:30 PM PT / 6:30 PM MT). The weekend wraps up with an early afternoon matchup against St. Thomas on Saturday (11:30 AM PT / 12:30 PM MT).

OPPONENT NOTES / SERIES HISTORY

  • Cal Baptist (17-5): The Lancers enter the weekend 17-5 overall, highlighted by a 14-game win streak that ended last weekend against No. 23 Arizona State and LMU. The Vikings and Lancers have met once in program history, with CBU earning an 8-2 win in Phoenix, Ariz., last season.
  • Boise State (9-12): Boise State enters its first home weekend of the season at 9-12 after going 1-4 at the Woo Pig Classic hosted in Arkansas last week. The Broncos lead the all-time series against PSU, 14-5, and have won nine straight meetings. The Vikings and Broncos last met earlier this season at the Easton Classic during opening weekend, when Boise State earned a 10-2 run-rule win in six innings on Feb. 7.
  • St Thomas (14-6): St. Thomas heads to Boise after a 3-2 weekend at the Crimson Classic, where it picked up wins over South Florida and Kent State to improve to 14-6 on the season. The Tommies are hitting .311 as a team and carry a 2.30 ERA. This weekend will mark the first meeting between the programs.
VIKINGS' LAST TIME OUT
  • The Vikings put together their first three-win weekend since 2024 at the OUTRIGGER Classic in Honolulu, going 2-1 against Mercyhurst and 1-1 against Hawai'i (Feb. 26-28)
  • Their two losses came by a combined three runs, including an eight-inning loss to Hawai'i on Friday. They closed the trip with a 2-0 day, earning a 10-3 win over Mercyhurst before a seventh-inning rally lifted them to a 5-4 comeback victory over the Rainbow Wahine
OFFENSIVE LEADERS
  • Grace Johnson leads the Vikings with a .409 batting average (18-for-44) and .490 on-base percentage–ranking fourth in the conference in both categories 
  • Other Vikings hitting over .300: Breanna Lutz (.341, 14-for-41), Jolee Benson (.308, 12-for-39) and Alison Harris (.333, 7-for-21)
  • Freshman Mia Martinez leads the Vikings with 11 RBI–knocking five hits for extra bases, including three home runs for a team-high .523 slugging percentage
WHO'S HOT? 
  • The Vikings had a season-best weekend at the plate in Honolulu, hitting .305 as a team, scoring 31 runs with seven players hitting above .300
  • Grace Johnson tallied 10 hits across five games – tallying an impressive .526 average, recording at least one hit in all five games, highlighted by a career-best 4-for-4 game vs. Mercyhurst (2/28)
  • Mia Martinez had a career weekend, hitting .400 (6-for-15) with seven RBI, including four in Saturday's win over Hawai'i (Feb. 28). Four of her six hits went for extra bases, including two home runs, giving her a .933 slugging percentage for the weekend.
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Gracie Walters carries a team-best 4.03 ERA into the weekend with a 2-2 record across four starts and five appearances, including three complete games
  • Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung is coming off a season-best weekend in her home state of Hawai'i, throwing complete games in both of her starts and finishing the trip with a 2-0 record
  • Giselle Pantoja earned her first collegiate victory with a complete-game outing against Hawai'i (2/28), leading the Vikings to a 5-4 win while allowing seven hits across seven innings
CHASING THE RECORD
  • Grace Johnson leads the Big Sky Conference with nine stolen bases, going a perfect 9-for-9 on her attempts, including four last weekend at the OUTRIGGER Classic in Honolulu
  • She ranks 58th nationally in total stolen bases (9) and 36th in stolen bases per game (0.60)
  • Her career total sits at 43, which ranks third all-time in the program's Division I era and is five shy of the record held by recent alum Olivia Dean (48)
MCWHORTER'S 150TH WIN
  • The Vikings' 3–1 win at Cal State Fullerton (2/7) marked a milestone for head coach Meadow McWhorter — her 150th career win at Portland State. She became just the second coach in program history to reach the milestone
PRESEASON NOTES
  • The Vikings will play a 46-game regular-season schedule, including 31 non-conference games and 15 Big Sky contests
  • Portland State's 2026 roster features 12 returners and 13 newcomers, including seven freshmen
  • Portland State will debut a new home field in 2026, playing at Hillsboro Ballpark — also home to the newly named AUSL team, the Portland Cascade.
