Vikings Fall at Santa Clara, 4-0

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Portland State men's tennis team closed out a three-match weekend in California on Sunday, falling to Santa Clara, 4-0, at the Degheri Tennis Center.

The Vikings finished the weekend 1-2 after defeating UC Santa Cruz and falling to Saint Mary's on Saturday in Moraga. Sunday's loss to the Broncos dropped Portland State to 2-5 overall on the season.

The Broncos secured the opening point by taking doubles matches at No. 1 and No. 3. Freshmen duo Aarjun Pandit and Ignacio Ruiz were tied 5-5 at line two when their match went unfinished.

Playing to a clinch, the Broncos needed just three singles wins to end it. They earned those victories in the back half of the lineup, winning in straight sets at lines four, five and six to secure the 4-0 win.

That left matches for Pandit (No. 1), Maas Schotanus (No. 2) and Luca Prino (No. 3) unfinished. Prino dropped his opening set but led 5-2 in the second, while Pandit trailed 3-4 and Schotanus was tied 2-2 after both lost their first sets.

Portland State will play two more matches before opening Big Sky Conference play against Montana State on Feb. 28. The first comes next weekend on the road at Washington on Saturday, Feb. 14 (3:00 p.m.), followed by a home match against Lewis-Clark State College on Saturday, Feb. 21 (10:00 a.m.).
