Box Score HILLSBORO, Ore. —In just their second-ever home match against crosstown rival Portland, the Portland State women's soccer team earned its first-ever tie against the Pilots—thanks to an 89th-minute equalizer from
Ocean Rideout on Saturday evening at Hillsboro Stadium.
The draw moved the Vikings to 1-3-2 on the season, while the Pilots dropped to 2-2-3 overall. Saturday's thriller marked the ninth all-time meeting between the teams—and the first since 2017. The result also snapped Portland's eight-match winning streak over Portland State.
Both teams were solid defensively throughout the match, combining for just six shots in the opening 45 minutes—five of which came from the Pilots. Viking goalkeeper Finley Crabtree finished with six saves, including a crucial one just over eight minutes into the match, when she made a leaping save to keep the Pilots off the board early. However, Portland struck before halftime, finding the back of the net in the 36th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
The Pilots kept their foot on the gas in the second half, recording 12 shots and putting five on goal. The Vikings, who didn't record a single corner kick in the contest and managed only four shots, made the most of their opportunities while holding the Pilots scoreless in the second half. With her team's back against the wall and just over a minute remaining, Ocean Rideout unleashed a 25-yard strike in the 89th minute to level the score. Portland pushed for one final chance in the closing seconds, but Crabtree and the Vikings' defense stood firm to secure the 1-1 draw.
The Vikings will hit the road next week for the first time in over three weeks, facing Utah Tech on Friday, Sept. 19, and Southern Utah on Sunday, Sept. 21.
