Have they done enough? That is the question a lot of Portland State players are asking themselves after the Vikings' second football scrimmage at Stott Community Field. Have they done enough in fall camp to get into the two-deep heading into the season opener on Aug. 23 against 10
th-ranked Tarleton State. Have they done enough to earn a starting role?
Â
The Vikings coaching staff will be answering those questions as they look at film from the scrimmage and hold staff meetings over the next two days. Things can always change, but preparation for game one will begin next week and the pieces need to be in place.
Â
"We have guys that we know are impact players who only saw a few plays today and then we got them out to keep them healthy," said Coach
Bruce Barnum. "Today was a day in which we looked at some talent that we hadn't seen enough of."
Â
In that regard it was mostly new players, redshirts and those who haven't seen much action yet as Vikings that Barnum hoped would validate themselves on the field.
Â
"(Transfer wide receiver)
Zachary Dodson-Greene has looked good, (redshirt defensive end)
Donte Hookfin has had a great camp. (Transfer defensive tackle)
Daniel Matagi is a great addition and what we hoped he would be up front," said Barnum. He also commended the Vikings new transfer linebackers (
Aeden Seiuli and
Henry Amposta), transfer cornerback
Dionte Thornton and redshirt defensive back
Pierce Walker.
Â
Once again, the big question remains: who will be the Vikings signal-caller in game one?
Â
"I will watch the film and name a quarterback soon," Barnum said. "We need to get that person geared up and knowing they are the man. Some other position choices may take a little longer."
Â
On the field, the play in scrimmage number two resembled last week's scrimmage number one. The offense started fast, scoring on the first series and three of the first four before the defense responded. In fact, the defense got four three-and-outs, a turnover and stops on two of three fourth-down plays during the 73-play scrimmage.
Â
"I thought the defense responded well once again. I thought our tackling was much better today than the first scrimmage. Our discipline was better, our penalties were down with real refs calling the game," said Barnum.
Â
Seiuli had a team-high eight tackles for the defense. Linebacker
Jaxton Helmstetler made six tackles. The Vikings also got an interception from defensive back
Tre Taylor.
Â
After completing 32-38 passes for 359 yards in last week's first scrimmage, the Viking quarterbacks were held to a 22-38 day for 223 yards in Saturday's effort.
Â
Sophomore
Gabe Downing was 6-12 passing for 72 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore
John-Keawe Sagapolutele completed 8-14 passes for 81 yards. Senior
CJ Jordan completed 6-9 passes for 59 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Redshirt freshman
Cru Newman was 2-3 passing for 11 yards and rushed for 24 yards. Redshirt freshman
Tyrese Smith ran a pair of run-oriented series' and rushed three times for 53 yards, including scores of 39 and three yards.
Â
On the ground, top returning back
Delon Thompson had five rushes for 21 yards in the first series then sat out the remainder of the day.
Jacques Badolato-Birdsell got the bulk of the rushing plays with 12 carries for 111 yards, including a 64-yard TD run.
Â
Senior kicker
Mathias Uribe hit field goals of 34 and 50 yards.
