FOREST GROVE, Ore. — It was a throwing showcase for the Portland State track & field program Friday out at Pacific University's Hanson Stadium. With all other events at the L&C Larry Byerly Invitational taking place Saturday back at Eldon Fix Track, the Vikings' throwers took center stage.
Â
Daniel Coppedge continues to claim the spotlight among the team's throwers with a second-place finish in the men's hammer. Coppedge threw over 183 feet for the second straight week, topping out at 183-08 (56.00m) on his fourth of six attempts in the competition. He threw 183-10 (56.05m) last week at the John Knight Twilight, which was only three feet short of his school record of 186-10 (56.96m) at the Oregon Preview on March 21.
Â
Noah Meucci trailed not far behind Coppedge, placing fourth with a mark of 168-01 (51.23m). Meucci's mark put him just one inch short of the personal best he set at the Rich Allen Classic on March 8. Friday marked the first time Meucci had surpassed 160 feet since that meet, and he did so on three of his six attempts.

Freshman
Jackson Wurz made his hammer debut Friday, placing 18th overall with a throw of 117-02 (35.71m). The mark moves Wurz into fourth place within the freshman rankings in the hammer. Wurz pushed classmate
Carter Green down to seventh, even as Green set a new personal best in the hammer for the second straight week. Green placed 29th overall with a throw of 97-03 (29.66m), topping his mark of 96-00 (29.27m) last week at the John Knight Twilight.
Â
Mikey LaGris also set a personal best by 17 inches in the hammer, throwing 90-00 (27.43m).
Â
Henry Glad led a group of three Vikings in the javelin, placing fourth overall with a best throw of 168-05 (51.33m). The mark represents Glad's second-best showing of the season, trailing only the personal best of 171-10 (52.37m) he set at the Stanford Invitational.
Â
Wurz followed up his hammer debut with a personal best in the javelin. He added 11 inches to the mark he set last week at the John Knight Twilight, throwing 151-06 (46.19m).
Â
Green, who also doubled back in the javelin, matched the mark he set last week with a throw of 140-09 (42.91m). He has yet to surpass his season-opening mark of 146-02 (44.55m) from the Rich Allen Classic, however.
Â
Sav Garcia represented the Viking women Friday, placing 12th in the javelin with a throw of 96-01 (29.29m). She made her PSU debut in the javelin last week at the John Knight Twilight with a throw of 99-05 (30.31m).
Â
Saturday will see other event groups step into the spotlight as the L&C Larry Byerly Invitational shifts over to the Eldon Fix Track on the campus of Lewis & Clark College. But for Friday, at least, the day belonged to the throwers.
