Vikings Fall to Iowa State, Arizona State in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Portland State softball team fell to Iowa State 10-0 and Arizona State 10-3 on Saturday at the GCU/ASU Classic held at the Sun Devils' Farrington Softball Stadium.

The Vikings dropped to 3-11 overall, while the Cyclones improved to 6-6 and the Sun Devils moved to 9-5.

In game one, the Cyclones jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. They added three more runs in the second, followed by four more across the fourth and fifth innings to go up 10-0. Meanwhile, they limited the Vikings to just one hit, which came from Lorraine Alo in Portland State's final at-bat.

The Vikings found an early spark in game two against the Sun Devils, scoring three runs in the top of the first. After capitalizing on a Sun Devil error, Alo drove in Ellie Babbitt and Grace Johnson, giving the Vikings a 3-0 lead. However, the Sun Devils quickly responded, scoring eight runs on four hits and two Viking errors in their opening at-bat to take an 8-3 lead. Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung held ASU scoreless in their next two at-bats, but a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth extended their lead to six. Arizona State added one more run in the bottom of the fifth and shut out the Vikings the rest of the way to secure a 10-3 victory.

The Vikings totaled three hits in game two, coming from Alo, Babbitt, and Neveah Smith.

Portland State aims to finish the weekend strong as they prepare to face Cal Baptist on Sunday morning at Farrington Softball Stadium in Tempe. First pitch is scheduled for 8:00 AM PT / 9:00 AM MT.
