Vikings Drop Weekend Finale to Cal Baptist

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Portland State softball team dropped its final game of the ASU/GCU Classic on Sunday, falling 8-2 to Cal Baptist at Farrington Softball Stadium.

The Vikings fell to 3-12 overall, while the Lancers improved to 7-9.

Sunday's game remained scoreless through two innings before Cal Baptist broke through in the third, taking a 3-0 lead. The Lancers followed with a big fourth inning, capitalizing on four hits and a pair of Viking errors to extend their lead to 7-0.

Portland State cut into the deficit in the sixth. Grace Johnson led off with a bunt single and moved to second on a wild pitch before a two-out RBI double from Natalia Martinez brought her home. A Lancer error allowed another run, making it 7-2.

Cal Baptist added one more in the bottom of the sixth and kept the Vikings off the board in the seventh to secure the win.

Portland State finished with five hits in the loss. Johnson led the Vikings at the plate, going 2-for-4, while Martinez, Lorraine Alo, and Rylee Gaustad each recorded a hit.

Portland State returns to action next weekend at the Oregon Invite in Eugene, opening with a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 28, against Loyola Chicago (12:30 PM) and Oregon (6:00 PM).
