BEAVERTON, Ore. - The Portland State men's tennis team secured its third victory of the season on Saturday, battling back from a lost doubles point with strong singles play to defeat George Fox 5-2 at the Tualatin Hill Tennis Center.
The Bruins, now at .500 with a record of 1-1, outperformed the Vikings in doubles, winning two of three matches to put PSU in an early 1-0 deficit.
Edoardo Cravanzola and Hayden Elliott were the only Vikings to win their doubles match, delivering a dominant 6-0 victory over Joseph Vece and Luis Hernandez at line three. However, George Fox claimed a 6-1 win on the top court and followed with a 6-4 victory at line two to finish the job.
The Vikings needed four singles wins to clinch the match, and they delivered with five straight-set victories. Simon Kuszynski opened PSU's scoring with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Vece on court six, marking his fifth victory of the season. Elliott matched that performance at No. 5, defeating Hernandez 6-1, 6-1. Shortly after, Heubert Theriault added a 6-2, 6-2 win against Ikuho Ebisu on court three, putting the Vikings ahead 3-1. Cravanzola and Luca Prino soon followed, clinching the match for PSU with victories on courts one and two, respectively. Cravanzola defeated Zach Moore 6-4, 6-2, while Prino won 6-3, 6-3 against Lars Schmassmann. Playing at the No. 4 spot for Portland State, Andrin Zuellig took his opening set, but GFU's Jackson Whittaker fought back, winning the second set and securing a super tiebreak victory of 10-8 to give the Bruins their second and final point of the day.
The Vikings will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 15, for a 10:00 AM matchup against Linfield at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
