Beukers, Salim Pick Up Wins in Vikings' Loss to Pilots

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State women's tennis team claimed two singles wins against Portland on Friday, but it wasn't enough to overcome their crosstown rival, as the Vikings fell 5-2 at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.

The match marked the Vikings' first counting contest since their win over Montana on Jan. 18. With the loss, they dropped to 1-2 on the season, while the Pilots improved to 1-3.

Portland took control early, sweeping all three doubles matches to secure the opening point.

The Vikings responded with a resilient singles performance, winning two matches and pushing two others to a third set or super tiebreaker. Senior captain Nika Beukers earned Portland State's first point of the day with a gritty 7-5 first-set win on her way to a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Sally Pethybridge at No. 1 singles. Hana Abdelhamid battled to claim the opening set at No. 3 but ultimately fell to Aleksandra Dimitrijevic 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-2. With victories at lines two and three, the Pilots clinched the dual with a win at No. 5.

Despite the match being decided, the Vikings continued to push UP in the final matches. Scarlett Perkins fought back from a first-set loss to Nadine Arbaizar Martinez at No. 4, clawing her way to a 7-6 (9) second-set win before falling 10-2 in the super tiebreak. Freshman Ayra Salim capped the day with the first singles win of her collegiate dual career, defeating Lexie Flores 6-3, 7-5 to secure the Vikings' second point.

Portland State returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 22, facing Seattle U on the road at 2:00 PM.
