OPENING TIP
A Saturday afternoon meet up with George Fox University will be a chance for Portland State to erase the memory of its last home game. The Vikings host the Bruins in a 2 p.m. contest at Viking Pavilion that can be seen on ESPN+.

PSU (5-3) comes off a home loss for the first time in a calendar year after falling to Omaha last Saturday, 60-55. It was a bit of a surprise after the Vikings had won 14 straight home games. However, a look at the numbers made it no surprise at all. PSU's shooting went south at .400 from the field, .200 from three-point range and .529 at the free throw line. That amounted to a mere 55 points, the fewest by a Portland State team in a home game since 2021. The Vikings went into the game with a +9.0 rebounding margin over opponents, but were beat on the boards, 36-29.

While absolutely nothing is assumed, this week's game with George Fox is an opportunity to right The Ship and start a new home streak. The Bruins (1-7) are a Division III member of the Northwest Conference. PSU has not lost to a lower division school in Head Coach Jase Coburn's tenure (12-0).

George Fox and Portland State actually have one common opponent: Northwest Indian College. PSU beat NWI, 122-74, on Nov. 4. George Fox defeated NWI, 97-68, on Nov. 22.

The Vikings are 3-1 at home this season. George Fox is 0-4 in road games.

COMING UP
Non-conference play concludes with road games at Colorado (Dec. 17) and Tulane (Dec. 20) next week.

The Big Sky Conference schedule begins on Jan. 1 at Weber State.

GAME NOTES: PORTLAND STATE vs. GEORGE FOX
  • ALL-TIME SERIES: Portland State leads the all-time series with George Fox, 8-0. It dates all the way to PSU's founding season in 1947-48 when the university was still Vanport Extension Center. The Vikings won a pair of games that year, 84-59 and 95-54... the most recent meeting came in 2023-24 when the Bruins took the Vikings to the wire in an 83-77 PSU win.
  • PORTLAND STATE vs. LOWER DIVISION SCHOOLS: Portland State is 64-2 against lower division schools in 30 seasons as a member of the Big Sky Conference and Division I (1996-2026). Head Coach Jase Coburn is a perfect 12-0 against such schools.
  • COACHES: Vikings Coach Jase Coburn (Arizona State, 2006) is in his fifth season as Head Coach. He spent eight previous seasons on the Park Blocks as an Assistant and Associate Head Coach. Coburn's overall record is 67-67. He is 2-0 against George Fox... the Bruins are coached by Maco Hamilton (Eastern Oregon, 2001) in his 13th season. He is 0-3 all-time against the Vikings.

SCOUTING THE BRUINS
  • George Fox is an NCAA III program competing in the Northwest Conference and located in Newberg, OR. GFU was 12-13 last season, 8-8 and fifth place in league play.
  • This season the Bruins are 1-7 overall. They average 72.9 points per game and allow 88.0 points... George Fox shoots .415 from the field, .311 from three-point range and .609 at the free throw line.

HOT SHOTS
  • JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT: Over the last five games, SR F Terri Miller Jr.  is averaging 17.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists, shooting .603 from the field, .500 from three-point range and .700 at the line... Miller put up a season-high 26 points (10-15 FG, 2-3 3-pt, 4-6 FT) and game-high 11 rebounds in the win at South Dakota... for the season, he averages 15.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and shoots .525/.435/.714.
  • JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT, PART 2: JR G Keyon Kensie Jr. rattled the cage for a career-high 22 points (8-17 FG, 6-8 FT), grabbed 10 rebounds and made two steals in the win over South Dakota. It was Kensie's team-best third double-double of the season... he came back to get 12 points (4-8 FG, 2-6 3-pt, 2-2 FT), six rebounds, two assists and two steals against Omaha... Kensie averages 10.8 points, 7.9 rebounds and has a team-high six blocked shots.
  • HENDERSON'S HELPERS: SR G Jaylin Henderson has done it all for the Vikings this season. Against South Dakota, Henderson set a new career high for assists with 11. It was the third time this season he has established a new career mark in that category... Henderson leads the Vikings in scoring (17.5), assists (6.2) and steals (2.3). He leads the Big Sky Conference in assists, ranks second in steals and third in scoring.
  • CHUCK IS NOT A CHUCKER: George Constanza made it clear his dislike for "chuckers" on the basketball court in an episode of Seinfeld. That said, he would love JR F Charles Chukwu. So far, Chukwu is 10-11 from the field this season (.909). Throw in his 30-game career at Tulsa a couple of seasons ago and Chukwu is a remarkable 26-34 from the field (.765) as a Division I player.
  • CHAIRMEN OF THE BOARDS: Portland State has been dominant on the boards this season.  The Vikings have out-rebounded opponents by an average of 7.0 per game, which ranks second in the Big Sky. The Vikings lead the Big Sky in offensive rebounding (13.6 pg)... SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott ranks second in the Big Sky with 8.4 rebounds per game. JR G Keyon Kensie Jr. ranks third at 7.9 per game. And SR F Terri Miller Jr. is sixth with 6.9 rebounds per game.
  • MORE GOOD STUFF THAT DOESN'T FIT ANYWHERE ELSE: Portland State leads the Big Sky Conference in offensive rebounds (13.6) and turnovers forced (14.5)... in the last four games PSU has held opponents to .384 shooting (89-232) and 63.8 points.
  • TRIVIA IS OUR NAME: Portland State Basketball has an all-time record of 899-872 in official games in 65 seasons as a collegiate program. That means the Viking program goes after win number 900 on Saturday.

NOT SO HOT
  • DEEP THOUGHTS: Despite winning three of the last four games, the Vikings have seen a precipitous dip in their three-point efficiency. In the first four games of the season, PSU was 40-99 from three-point range (10.0/.404). In the last four games, the Vikings are 22-95 (5.5/.232).
  • TURNOVER TALLY: Portland State is averaging 14.3 turnovers per game, up from 12.7 last year.
