OPENING TIP
With two games at home next week, and four of the next six in Viking Pavilion, the Portland State Vikings have a chance to create some momentum in non-conference play. PSU will host CSU Bakersfield on Monday night at The Ship, followed by Evergreen State on Wednesday. Both games tip of at 7 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
    Â
The Vikings will enter the week at 1-2 on the season. Both losses have come on the road to quality opponents - Stanford and San Francisco - by 10 points each. On Wednesday, the Vikings lost to the Dons after a slow start hindered their chances. A strong shooting, 50-point second half gave drew them close but they fell short in seeking a first road win of the season.
    Â
SR G
Jaylin Henderson scored 18 points with six assists to lead the Vikings. Through three games, the preseason All-Big Sky selection, has led the team in scoring at 19.0 points while averaging 4.3 assists and 3.0 steals. SR C
Tre-Vaughn Minott, another preseason All-Big Sky choice, had his first double-double of the year with a career-high matching 16 points (7-10 FG) and 13 rebounds.
    Â
PSU has shot the ball well through three games with a shooting slash line of .500/.366/.700 and an average of 10 three-pointers per contest. However, fouls (27.3) and turnovers (16.0) have been a bugaboo. Opponents are averaging 15 more free throw attempts per game than the Vikings.
    Â
Portland State should enjoy the home court in the coming week as it has won 12 straight at Viking Pavilion dating to last season and is 25-3 since the start of the 2023-24 campaign.
    Â
CSU Bakersfield, a member of the Big West Conference, has a 2-1 record heading into a Saturday night game at Ole Miss. The Roadrunners have wins over Whittier and Western Illinois at home with a loss at Cal.
    Â
Monday's contest is a return game from last year's matchup in Bakersfield. PSU won that one, 59-58, at the Icardo Center. The Roadrunners will be playing at PSU for the first time in seven seasons. All seven games in the series history have been played since 2010-11. PSU has won two of the three played at home.
    Â
COMING UP
The Vikings have another home game on Wednesday, hosting Evergreen State at 7 p.m. Following that, four of the final six non-conference games will be on the road.

HOT SHOTS
- 5 FOR 5, AND THEN 5 MORE: Number 5, SR G Jaylin Henderson, had five dunks against Northwest Indian to tie a school record set by teammate SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott last season. Sooooo, Minott came back to make five dunks against San Francisco on Wednesday night. And now it has been done three times...
- WICHITA LINEMAN: Wichita, KS native SR G Jaylin Henderson has the best line going for the Vikings through three games this season. Henderson leads PSU in scoring (19.0), steals (9) and total assists (13).
- VIKINGS OPEN TIDOR: You won't see many better debuts than the one JR G Sebastian Tidor had at Stanford (11/4). A redshirt last season, Tidor came off the bench in his first game as a Viking, scoring 22 points (7-11 FG, 6-10 3-pt, 2-2 FT) with seven rebounds and two assists in 32 minutes.... Tidor had 11 points off the bench (4-12 FG, 3-8 3-pt) at San Francisco.
- MORE GOOD STUFF THAT DOESN'T FIT ANYWHERE ELSE: JR G Keyon Kensie Jr. had the first double-double of the year for Portland State with 14 points and 12 rebounds against Northwest Indian... SO G Kelcy Phipps scored a career-high 10 points against the Eagles... walk-on Colt Ness made the start vs. NWI, the first in recent memory by a walk on. He had five points and a team-high five assists... FR F Brayden Barron scored eight points (4-5 FG) with eight rebounds in 14 minutes against NWI... the Vikings shot 50-81 from the field in the game (.617).
Â
NOT SO HOT
- INFRACTIONS AND OBSTRUCTIONS: Portland State has played well but also made a number of mistakes in the first three games. The Vikings are averaging 27.3 fouls and 16.0 turnovers... last season the Vikings averaged 17.5 fouls and 12.7 turnovers per game... opponents have shot 15 more free throws per game than the Vikings, making 11.3 more.
Â
STUFF STUFF
- 200 WATCH: The Vikings have 21 dunks through three games this season. That is on pace for more than 200 in the season, which would obliterate the school record of 123 dunks, set last season. While 200 isn't likely, we are keeping our eyes on it...
- SEASON HIGH: PSU had a season-high 11 dunks against Northwest Indian (11/7). The school record for the team in a game is 13.
- SEASON HIGH, PART TWO: SR G Jaylin Henderson had five dunks against Northwest Indian (11/7) to tie a school record set by teammate SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott last season in a game against Idaho. Minott tied it again with five dunks against San Francisco (11/2).
- A SLAMTASTIC SEASON: Last year, Portland State set a school record with 123 dunks as a team... SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott set an individual record with 44 dunks.

- Portland State has had a remarkable run at Viking Pavilion:
- PSU has a 12-game home court winning streak at The Ship.
- The Vikings have won 12 straight Big Sky Conference home games dating back to the 2023-24 season.
- With a 13-1 home record last season, Portland State trailed in only five of the 14 games, winning wire-to-wire in nine games. In a total of 560 minutes played in Viking Pavilion, the Vikings trailed for only 67 minutes and 59 seconds. And the Vikings' lone home loss came by a single point.
- PSU is 25-3 at home since the start of the 2023-24 season.
- Portland State's Feb. 19 game with Idaho has been added to the ESPNU schedule. It will be televised nationally with a 6 p.m. tip time.
