Emma Stolte Posts Third Straight Top Five Finish to Lead Vikings at Bronco Invitational

RESULTS

SUNNYVALE, Calif. —
Emma Stolte is inevitable.

The redshirt junior posted her fourth straight top 10 finish – and third straight top five finish – while leading the Viking women Saturday at the Bronco Invitational. The Viking men showed resilience themselves, placing in the top half of the 18-team field at Baylands Regional Park despite only having five runners available.

Stolte placed third overall in the women's 6k, continuing what's been an outstanding year for the Vikings' top runner. Stolte won the 5k at the Ash Creek Festival on Sept. 12, and then finished as the top collegiate runner and fourth overall at the Mike Johnson Classic on Sept. 27.

But Saturday's field was going to be the deepest and most talented field yet for Stolte and the Vikings. Head coach Joseph Blue said midweek he was eager to see how Stolte would respond with regionally ranked teams in the field. Clearly, she responded just fine, finishing behind only Santa Clara's Milaina Almonte (20:06.5) and UC Santa Barbara's Addie Oversmith (20:33.6).

Stolte finished in 20:37.4, shaving 12 seconds off the 6k personal best she set three weeks earlier at the Mike Johnson Classic. Stolte moved up to fifth all-time in the 6k at Portland State with the finish.

The Viking women had five of their six runners set personal bests in the 6k, including all three freshmen, as they finished 10th out of 16 teams with 240 total points.

Taylor Nichols joined her classmate, Stolte, in setting a personal best. Nichols finished 18th overall in 21:16.8, shaving 11 seconds off her previous best from the Mike Johnson Classic.

Freshmen Sam Sharp and Sonja Jones also bettered their times from the Mike Johnson Classic while placing 53rd and 93rd overall, respectively. Their improvements ranged from half a second for Sharp, who finished in 21:57.1, to 55 seconds for Jones, who finished in 22:35.4.

Sophomore Irina López closed out the team score for the Viking women, placing 117th overall in 23:02.4.

Freshman Riley Amarillas placed 136th overall in 23:51.7, 27 seconds faster than her time at the Mike Johnson Classic.

Abdinajib Abade and Farhan Ibrahim both set personal bests in the 8k to lead the Viking men. Their improvements helped provide two low sticks for a Viking team that only had five runners available, and yet still placed ninth out of 18 teams with 286 total points.

Abade placed 18th overall in 24:27.2, 24 seconds ahead of his time at the Charles Bowles Invitational two weeks earlier. Abade was only six seconds off entering the all-time top 10 in the 8k at Portland State, something no Viking has done since 2022.

Ibrahim, meanwhile, shaved 10 seconds off his 8k personal best while finishing 37th overall in 24:49.6.

Luke Gillingham placed 92nd overall in 25:43.8 as the Viking men's third runner, while freshmen Benjamin Sanchez and JD Arthur closed it out at 122nd and 138th overall, respectively. Sanchez, who was running his first 8k, finished in 26:13.1, while Arthur crossed the line in 26:35.2.

Saturday's Bronco Invitational closes the regular season for the Vikings. They'll enter the postseason in two weeks when they travel to Bozeman, Mont., for the Big Sky Championships on Nov. 1.

There, if you place in the top 10, you earn all-conference honors. The competition level will raise again, of course, but after Saturday, don't count out Stolte.
