Vikings Win Three of Four Throwing Events on Opening Day of Portland Indoor 1

RESULTS

PORTLAND, Ore. —
A few hours before the Portland State men's basketball team won its sixth straight home game, the Viking track & field program heated up Viking Pavilion with a throwing series to kick off the Portland Indoor 1.

A group of six Vikings hosted a handful of other area throwers for men's and women's shot put and weight throw competitions in the practice gym at Viking Pavilion. The Vikings won three of the four events while all six Vikings set a personal best of some kind on the day.

Natalie Cunningham, a goalkeeper for the Portland State women's soccer team when she's not competing in the throws, swept the women's events. Her win in the weight throw wasn't hard, as she was the only athlete competing, but she beat three other athletes in the shot put. Cunningham threw 38-00.75 (11.60m) on her fifth attempt in the shot put, adding 15 inches to the indoor best she set last week at the UW Preview. Cunningham threw 38-07.00 (11.76m) on her first attempt in the weight throw. With no other competitors, she took two scratches before throwing only once more.

Daniel Coppedge picked up the third win for the Vikings in the men's weight throw. Coppedge led the competition wire-to-wire but still posted his best mark on his final attempt with a throw of 54-01.75 (16.50m). That marked a PSU best for Coppedge, who has a better overall best than the current school record in the weight throw but has yet to pass Jim Webster's record of 55-04.25 (16.87m) while competing for PSU. Coppedge's throw Saturday marked a 13.75-inch improvement over his debut mark for the Vikings at last week's UW Preview.

Noah Meucci also bettered his mark from last week, as he nearly cracked 50 feet for the first time with a throw of 49-11.00 (15.21m) on his fifth attempt of the day. Meucci, who placed second to Coppedge in the weight throw, ranks fourth all-time in the weight throw at Portland State.

Jackson Wurz placed fourth in the weight throw while adding nearly two feet to his personal best with his mark of 40-03.50 (12.28m) Saturday. Meucci and Wurz also placed third and fourth in the men's shot put with throws of 41-08.75 (12.72m) and 39-05.00 (12.01m), respectively.

Carter Green added more than three feet to his best in the weight throw while placing sixth overall with his throw of 33-07.50 (10.25m). Mikey LaGris beat his previous best by five inches while placing eighth with a best throw of 27-06.75 (8.40m).

The track events for the Portland Indoor 1 will take place tomorrow at the University of Portland's Chiles Center. Events start at 12 p.m.
